The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Grihya-sutra with the commentaries of Haradatta (called the Anakula-vritti) and Sudarshana (called the Grihyatatparyadarshana-vyakhya). The Apastamba Grihyasutra is a short treatise on Vedic rituals which, together with the Hiranyakeshin-grihya-sutra, belongs to the Taittiriya School of the Black Yajur-Veda. caturthyāmityarthaḥ /
tatra kim? yadvāsaḥ kumārasya dhārya sadyaḥkṛttotaṃ paridhāpitaṃ tadācārya ādatte uttarayarcā "yasya te prathamavāsya"mityetayā /
anyadvāsaḥ paridhāya /
tryahe tu tasminniyamena sadyaḥkṛttotameva /

caturthīmityatra na rātrirvivakṣitā /
kiṃ tarhi?ahorātrasamudāyaḥ /
tatrāhanyavādānaṃ vāsasaḥ'udagayanapūrvapakṣāhaḥ'iti niyamāt /

mekhalāmajinaṃ daṇḍamupavītaṃ kamaṇḍalum /

Sudarśana’s Gṛhyatātparyadarśana-vyākhyā (sūtra 11.24)

chaturthīmiti saptamyarthe dvitīyā /
caturthyā rātrau caturthāhorātre ahanyeva'udagayanapūrvapakṣāhaḥ'(āpa.gṛ.1-2) iti niyamāt /
vāsaḥ

upanayanakāle yatparidhāpitaṃ tadācāryaḥ saptaśakṛtvo'pānya'yasya te prathamavāsyam'ityanayaiva svīkaroti, na tu sāvitreṇa;atra viśeṣavidherbalīyastvāt /
upadeśamataṃ tu'devā vai varuṇamayājayan, (tai.brā.2-2-5) iti liṅgādayajñeṣu na pratigrahavidhiriti /

etaccānyadvāsaḥ kumāraṃ paridhāpyaiva kartavyam /
sa tu'guro vāsaste dadāmi, iti dadyāt /
etaccatryahaṃ mantravatparihitameva vāsaḥ paridheyam /

āpastambamatyā etadantamupanayanam //25//


atha pālāśakarmabhāṣyaṃ likhyate-

kecit smṛtyantaropasaṃhāreṇa palāśavṛkṣasamīpe pālāśaṃ karma kurvate samānam /
anyeṣāṃ ca śraddhadhānānāṃ hitārtha pālāśakarmaṇo vidhirucyate-trīṇyahāni pratyahamāmamaikṣamācaret /
caturtha'hanyannasaṃskāreṇa saṃskṛtyācāryeṇa saha prācīmūdīcīṃ diśamupaniṣkramya pūrveṇottareṇa palāśavṛkṣaṃ trīṇyudagapavargāṇi sthaṇḍilāni kalpayitvā teṣu yathākramaṃ pratyaṅmukhaḥ praṇavaśraddhāmedhābhyor'ghyapādyācamanasnānavastragandhamālyadhūpadīpabalīṃśca datvāthopatiṣṭhate /
'yaśchandadasām'ityanena'śrutaṃ me gopāya'(tai.u.1-4) ityantena praṇavam /

śravaṇāpakṣe śravaṇasya māsasya pūrvapakṣa ityarthaḥ /
oṣadhīṣu jātāsu pravarṣaṇādrūḍhāsu hastena nakṣatreṇa paurṇamāsyāṃ śrāvaṇasya kartavyamityarthaḥ /
adhyāyasyopākaraṇaṃ adhyāyopākarmaprārambha ityarthaḥ /

evamupākaraṇasya kāla uktaḥ /
atha prayogaḥ-agnerupasamādhānādi tantraṃ pratipadyate /
agniśca śrotriyāgārādvāhāryaḥ, manthyo , na tvaupāsano bahūnāmatra sahatvābhāvāt /
bhāryāyāśca sahatvābhāvāt vacanamatraprayoga? /
vidyāsaṃskārā4thamidaṃ karma vedasaṃyuktam /

tatrājyabhāgānte'nvārabdheṣu śiṣyeṣu pradhānāhutīrjuhoti /
kāṇḍaṛṣibhyaḥ prajāpatissomo'gnirviśvadevā brahmā svayaṃbhū- iti pañca kāṇḍaṛṣayaḥ /

tatra prajāpataye svāheti homaḥ /
prajāpataye kāṇḍaṛṣaye svāhetyanye /
'sadasaspatimadbhuta'mityanena sadasaspataye juhoti /
'tatsavitu'rityetayā sāvitrye, kalpāntare tathā darśanāt /

tatra kāṇḍopakaraṇe ekāha- pārāyaṇopākaraṇe tryahaḥ /
adhīyīranniti vacanaṃ upākṛtyatryahādūrdhva niyamenādhyayanaṃ yathā syāditi //6//

yena prakereṇopākaraṇaṃ kṛtaṃ tathādhyayanaṃ kartavyam /
yadi sarvebhyaḥ kāṇḍaṛṣibhyo hutvā vedādau trayāṇāmanuvākānāmārambhaḥ kṛtaḥ prathamottamayorvā tathā sati yathādhyāyamadhyayanaṃ kartavyam /
yadi tu kāṇḍādīnāṃ sarveṣāmārambhaḥ tathā sati yathākāṇḍamadhyetavyam /
yastu kṛtsnaṃ vedamaraṇye'nuvākyāni parihāpya prāgutsarjanādadhyetuṃ na śaknoti tasya pṛthakvāmḍopākaraṇam /
tatra tasyaiva kāṇḍasyaika ṛṣiḥ sadasaspatiḥ sāvitrī vedāhutaya upahomāḥ pariṣcanānte tasyaiva kāṇḍasyānuvākaṃ ekāhamanadhyāyaḥ tasyaiva kāṇḍasyādhyayanam //

taiṣīpakṣasya rohiṇyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ votsargaḥ //8//


evamupākṛtyānadhyāyavarja vedaṃ kāṇḍaṃ vāraṇye'nuvākyāni parihāpyādhīyānasya rohiṇyāmutsargaḥ kartavyaḥ /
paurṇamāsyāṃ taiṣīpakṣasyaiva /

tatrāsminkarmaṇi homo'pi bhavati /
kathaṃ bhavati ?upākaraṇavat samānavidhānādupākaraṇavadgṛhe hutvaiva kṣamyamāṇaṃ karma pratipadyate /

hiraṇyakeśināṃ tu tarpaṇādūrdhva udakānte homaḥ //8//

5 tatra tarpaṇīyebhya ṛṣibhya āsanaparikalpanam /

prācīmudīcīṃ sagaṇo diśamupaniṣkramya yatrāpaḥ purastāt sukhāḥ sukhāvagāhā avakinyaḥ śaṅkhinyaḥ tāsāmantaṃ gatvābhiṣekān kṛtvā surabhimatyābliṅgābhirvāruṇībhirhiraṇyavarṇābhiḥ pāvamānībhiriti mārjayitvāntarjalagato'ghamarṣaṇena trīn prāṇāyāmān dhārāyitvottīryā'camyopotthāya darbhānanyonyasmai sampradāya śucau deśe prākkūlairdarbhairāsanāni kalpayanti //9//


sagaṇa saśiṣyaḥ yatrāpaḥ purastaditi yatra deśe pūrvasyāṃ diśi apaḥpaśyatītyarthaḥ /
sukhāḥ sukhasparśāḥ /
sukhāvagāhāḥ sutīrthāḥ

yāsvavakā bhavanti tāḥ avakinyaḥ tathā śaṃkhinyaḥ tāsāmantaṃ samīpaṃ gatvā biṣekān kuṃbhaiḥ kṛtvā tataḥ surabhimatyā dadhikrāvamṇa itye tayābliṅgābhiḥ'āpohi ṣṭhā mayo bhuva'iti tisṛbhiḥ vāruṇībhiḥ avate heḍa uduttamamimaṃ me varuṇa tatvāyīmītyetābhiḥ

hiraṇyavarṇīyābhiḥ' hiraṇyavarṇāśśucayaḥ pāvakā' iti catasṛbhiḥ pāvamānībhiḥ pavamānaḥ suvarjana, ityetenānuvākena mārjayitvā

abhyukṣya pratimtraṃ kriyābhyāvṛttiḥ pratipādamityanye /
tato'ntarjalagataḥ jalasyāntarnimagno'ghamarṣaṇena tṛcena'ṛtaṃ ca satyaṃ ce'tyaghamarṣaṇadṛṣṭena trīn prāṇāyāmān dhārayati /
sarvatra sagaṇa ityeva /

apsu nimaḍyaitamanuvākaṃ sakṛjjapati sa ekaḥ prāṇāyāmaḥ /
evaṃ trirdhārayitvottīrya gṛhyāntaradarśanāt prakṣālitopadātānyākliṣṭāni vāsāṃsi paridhāyācamyotthāya dvau saṃbhūya darbhānanyonyasmai saṃpradāya tataḥ śucau deśe udakānta eva sthaṇḍilāni pṛthakkṛtvā darbhaiḥ prāgagraiḥ āsanāni kalpayanti //9//


kebhyaḥ?devebhyaḥ pitṛbhyaḥ ṛṣibhyaśca /

brahmaṇe prajāpataye bṛhaspataye'gnaye vāyave sūryāya candramase nakṣatrebhyaḥ ṛtubhyassaṃvatsarāya indrāya rājñe somāya rājñe yamāya rājñe vaiśravaṇāya rājñe vasubhyo rudrebhya ādityebhyo viśvebhyo devebhyassādhyebhyo marudbhya ṛbhubhyo bhṛgubhyo'ṅgirobhya iti devagaṇānām //10//

devagaṇa iti devānāṃ ca tadgaṇānāṃ cetyarthaḥ /
atra brahmādi daśa devatāḥ /
indrādayaḥ pañca rājānaḥ /
vasvādayaḥ daśa devagaṇāḥ /

sarvānte kalpayantīti vacanāt sarvatra kalpayāmītyasya sambandhaḥ /
brahmaṇe kalpayāmi prajāpataye kalpayāmīti /
etāni pañcaviṃśatirāsanānyudagapavargāṇi /
tarpaṇaṃ caiṣāṃ devena tīrthena bhavati //10//

6 tarpayitavyāḥ devagaṇāḥ ṛṣigaṇāśca /

atharṣayaḥ -- viśvāmitro jamadagnirbharadvājo gautamo'trirvasiṣṭhaḥ kaśyapa ityete saptarṣayaḥ, saptarṣibhyaḥ kalpayitvā dakṣiṇato'gastyāya kalpayanti //11//


devānāmuttarataḥ saptarṣīṇāmāsanāni, dakṣiṇato'gastyāya, kaśyapādūrdhvamarundhatyāḥ, gṛhyāntaradarśanāt //11//


tato yāvadekavaidyantaiḥ kalpayanti //12//


tataḥ anantaraṃ yāvantaḥ ekavedyantā samānavedyantāḥ?saptarṣibhiḥ, tebhyaḥ kalpayanti /
ke punaste?kṛṣṇadvaipāyanādaya ṛṣayaḥ /
etaduktaṃ bhavati-kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāya jītūkarṇyāya tarukṣāya tṛṇībindave somaśuṣmiṇe somaśuṣkāya varmiṇe sanadvājāya bṛhadukthāya vāmadevāya vācaratnāya haritayajvanaḥ udamayāya gautamāya ṛṇañjayāya kṛtjayāya babhrave tryaruṇāya tridhātave trivarṣāya śibintāya parāśarāya vasiṣṭāyendrāya mṛtyave kartre tvaṣṭre dhātre savitre bhṛtaśravase sāvitryai vedebhyaśceti pṛthak /
ete kṛṣṇadvaipāyanādayaṃścatustriṃśadṛṣayaḥ /
vedāścatvāra ityaṣṭātriṃśadekavedyantāḥ saptarṣibhiḥ /
kecidatharvāṅgirasa itihāsapurāṇāni sa4padevajanān sarvabhūtānītyeteṣāmapi vedagrahaṇena grahaṇamicchanti; kalpāntare tathā darśanāt //12//

prācīnāvītāni kṛtvā dakṣiṇato vaiśampāyanāya paiṅgaye tittiraye ukhāyātreyāya padākārāya,kauṇḍinyāya vṛttikārāya,baudhāyanāya pravacanakārāya, āpastambāya sūtrakārāya, bharadvājāya sūtrakārāya, satyāṣāḍhāya hiraṇyakeśāya, ācāryebhya ūrdhvaretobhya, ekapatnībhyo vānaprasthebhyaḥ kalpayāmīti //13//


tataḥ sarve prācīnāvītāni kṛtvā vaiśampāyanādibhyo dvādaśabhya āsānāni kalpayanta dakṣiṇato devānāmagastyasya ta /
tatra dakṣiṇāpravaṇadeśe dakṣiṇāgraiḥ pratyagapavarga(sagṛ.2-19-7) miti kalpāntaram //13//

7tarpaṇīyānāṃ pitṝṇāmāsanaparikalpanam /

atha yathāsvaṃ pitṛbhyaḥ kalpayanti mātāmahebhyaśca pṛthak //14//


yathāsvaṃ yasya ye pitaraḥ pitāmāhāḥ prapitāmahā mātāmahāśca māturye pitṛpitāmahaprapitāmahāḥ sarvebhya ubhayebhyaḥkalpayantītyarthaḥ /
prācīnāvītāni kṛtvā dakṣiṇata iti cānuvartate /
tatra yathāsvaṃ pitrādīnāṃ nāmabhiḥ kalpanaṃ-rudraśarmaṇe viṣṇuśarmaṇa iti /
anye pitṛbhya ityeva kalpayanti /
kimartha tarhi yathāsvamiti?jīvapitṛkāṇāmihāpi piṇḍadānavadupāyaviśeṣapratītyarthaḥ //14//


yajñopavītāni kṛtvā teṣveva deśeṣu tayaivānupūrvyā taireva nāmābhirdevānṛṣīṃśca tarpayanti vaiśampāyanaprabhṛtīṃstu mātuḥ prapitāmahaparyantān prācīnāvītinastarpayanti - amuṃ tarpayāmyamuṃ tarpayāmyamuṃ tarpayāmīti //15//


atha kalpāntare dṛṣṭo viśeṣaḥ-amuṣmai namo'muṣmai nama iti gandhapuṣpadhūpadīpaiḥ, amuṣmai svāhāmuṣmai svāhetyannena, amuṃ tarpayāṇyamuṃ tarpayāmīti phalodakeneti(bhā.gṛ.3-11) (sa.gṛ.2-10-5,6,7) //15//

abhipyā prārthanā /
ihotsarjane karmaṇi śiṣyāṇāmupādhyāyasya ca snānādiṣu karmasu saha pravṛttiścoditā /
sarvatra vahuvacananirdeśāt-abhiṣekān kṛtvā'sanāni kalpayantīti /
tatrāyaṃ viśeṣo vaikalpika upadiśyate anyonyamabhipyante dvau dvau sambhūyānyo'nyaṃ prārthayante vāsaḥ pravṛtyartha na sarve saheti /
adhītsanta iti pāṭhe ṛdhyateretadrīpam /
upasargavaśācca sa evārthaḥ /
ye tvadhiśabdāt paraṃ takāramevādhīyate na rarephamapi teṣāṃ dhāturma-gyārtha eva //16//

10 jalasamīpe dūrvāropaṇam /

'kāṇḍāt kāṇḍāt prarohantī'ti dvābhyāmupodake dūrvā ropayanti //19//


atha samūlaṃ dūrvāstambamāhṛtya tamudakasya samīpe ropayat /
yathā dūrvā prarohati tathā nikhananti'kāṇḍāt kāṇḍāt prarohantī'ti dvābhyāmṛgbhyāmā /
tatra dūrvā ityekavacanaśravaṇāt eka eva mukhyo nikhanati tamitare'nvārabheran /
anye pratipūruṣamucchanti // 19 //

11 jalasya kṣobhaṇam, jalāduttīryā'jidhāvanam /

apaḥ pragāhyodadhiṃ kurvanti //20//


athāpaḥ praviśya tatrodadhiṃ kurvanti /
udadhiḥ samudraḥ tamiva kṣobhayantītyarthaḥ //20//
kathaṃ tadityāha--

sarvataḥ parivāryormimantaḥ kurvanti //21//


bahubhiḥ parivārya sarvata ssannirudhya yathormayastatrotpadyante tathā kūrvantītyartaḥ /
evaṃ triḥ kurvanti //21//


udgāhyā'tamitorājiṃ dhāvanti //22//


udgāhya uttīrya ātamito- āśramajananāt ājiṃ dhāvanti /
prācīmudīcīṃ diśamabhidhāvanti /
tathāpavargaḥ //22//

12 brāhmaṇabhojanam /

pratyetyābhidānādi saktubhirodaneneti brāhmaṇān bhojayitvā vācayati //23//


pratyetya gṛhān praviśyetyarthaḥ /
īśiṣaḥ puṇyāhādyāḥ puṇyāhaṃ svastyṛdhyatāmiti vācayitveti //23//


evaṃ pārāyaṇasamāptau ca kāṇḍādi dūrvāropaṇodadhidhāvanavarjam //24//


yathāsmin vārṣike'pyadhyāye samāpte utsargaścoditaḥ evameva pārāyaṇasamāptāvapi kartavyam /
tatra varjyāṇi-kāṇḍādanimadhyayanaṃ, dūrvāropaṇamudhikaraṇamājijhāvanaṃ ceti //24//


pratyetya brāhmaṇabhojanādi karma pratipadyate //25//


kāṇḍādigrahaṇāt pārāyaṇādhyayane yathākāṇḍamevādhyayanam, na tu sambhinnasya pāṭhasyeti kecit /
anye tu kāṇḍādigrahaṇasyopalakṣaṇatvāt sarvaprakārasyānuvākādhyayanasya pratiṣedhaḥ /
pārāyaṇe ca yathārucyadhyayanāmityāhuḥ //25//


evamevādbhiraharahardevānṛṣīn pitṝṃśca tarpayet //26//


adbhiriti vacanāt aharahastarpaṇamādbhireva /
tenotsargakarmaṇi pūrvoktānāṃ gandhādīnāmapi pravṛttiḥ /

pūrvatropanayanaṃ vyākhyātam /
upanītasya ca dharmaśāstre'atha brahmacaryavidhiḥ'(āpa.dha.1-2-18) ityārabhya dharmā upadiṣṭāḥ /

adhyāyakāṇḍavratānāmupākaraṇasamāpanaryorvidhśca'upākaraṇe samāpane ca ṛṣiryaḥ prajñāyate'(āpa.gṛ.8-1) ityatra sampūrṇameva vyākhyātaḥ

athojānīṃ vedaṃ vratāni pāraṃ nītvā hayubhayameva //
(yājña.smṛ.1-51) ityādivacanārthānuṣṭhānena kṛtakṛtyasya gurukulāt samāvṛttasyānuṣṭheyaṃ samāvartanāparaparyāyaṃ snānākhyaṃ karma vyākhyāyate /

kecit-'upākaraṇe samāpane ca'(āpa.gṛ.8-1) ityatraitayoḥ kalpasyāprasidhdhatvāt, avaśyamanyatra prasiddha āśrayitavya iti vadantaḥ

'athāta upākaraṇotsarjane vyākhyāsyāmaḥ, ityādikaṃ vratapaṭalaṃ nāma upanayanānantaraṃ vyācakṣate /
