Chapter 10 - The story of Virūḍhaka

teṣāmapaścimako virūḍhako nāma ikṣvākurājo'bhūd; virūḍhakasya gautamā ikṣvākurājasya catvāraḥ putrāḥ; ulkāmukhaḥ karakarṇī hastiniyaṃsaḥ nūpurakaśca; tasyāpareṇa samayenāgramahiṣī kālagatā; sa kare kapolaṃ datvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ; amātyāḥ kathayanti: kimarthaṃ deva kare kapolaṃ datvā cintāparastiṣṭhati; sa kathayati: mamāgramahiṣī kālagatā; kathaṃ na cintāparastiṣṭhāmīti; deva yadyevaṃ kimarthaṃ devasyāgramahiṣī na samanviṣyate; saṃvidyante pratisāmāntakānāṃ rājñāṃ (27) duhitaraḥ; (a 358 ) rājā kathayati: ime rājyābhinandinaḥ kumārāḥ; eṣu saṃvidyamāneṣu pratyanīkabhūteṣu ko me duhitaraṃ dāsyati: devaścittaṃ karotu; vayaṃ samanveṣāmaḥ; yāvadanyatamasya rājñaḥ duhitā abhirūpā darśanīyā prāsādikā pratirūpā devītvena; te tāṃ samupalabhya tasya rājñaḥ sakāśaṃ gatāḥ; taiḥ pāraṃparyeṇa rājño niveditaṃ; rājñā ājñā dattā āhūyatāmiti; tataste rājñaḥ sakāśaṃ preṣitāḥ; pādayornipatya kathālāpapūrvakaṃ niṣaṇṇāḥ; ālāpāvasaraprāptā rājānaṃ saṃmukhaṃ dṛṣṭvā kathayanti: deva svasti svastīti; rājā kathayati: bhavantaḥ kiṃ yācadhve; virūḍhakasyekṣvākurājasyāgramahiṣī kālagatā; tasyārthāya kanyāṃ bhikṣāṃ; rājā kathayati: śobhanaṃ pratirūpo varaḥ; kiṃ tu samayato'nuprayacchāmi yadi me duhituḥ putro bhavati; taṃ yadi rājyaiśvaryādhipatye pratiṣṭhāpayati; deva evaṃ bhavatu gacchāmaḥ devaṃ śrāvayāmaḥ; tairgatvā virūḍhakasyekṣvākurājasya yathāvṛttamārocitaṃ; rājā kathayati: bhavanto naitatpratirūpaṃ jyeṣṭhatarān rājyābhinandinaḥ kumārān pratyākhyāya kanīyasaḥ pratiṣṭhāpanaṃ; deva sandigdho'yamarthaḥ ānīyatāṃ tāvaddevī; tayā sārdhaṃ devaḥ krīḍatu ramatāṃ paricārayatu; na jñāyate kimasau kumāraṃ janayiṣyatītyāhosvitkumārikāṃ vandhyā bhaviṣyatīti; rājā kathayati: bhavanto yadyevaṃ gacchata; tataḥ pratiṣṭā bhavatu; tairgatvā pratigṛhītā; yāvadrājñā mahatā śrīsamudāyena pariṇītā; ca rājño'bhimatā saṃvṛttā; sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati; tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ kālāntare devī āpannasatvā saṃvṛttā; aṣṭānāṃ navānāṃ māsānāmatyayātprasūtā; dārako jātaḥ abhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ; tasya jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpyate kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti; amātyā deva yasmādayamajāta eva (28) rājyamabhinandati tasmādbhavatu dārakasya rājyābhinandīti; sa dārakaḥ aṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyaḥ anupradattaḥ pūrvavadyāvadāśu vardhate hradasthamiva paṅkajaṃ; taṃ rājā yauvarājye na pratiṣṭhāpayati; tasya mātāmahena rājñā śrutaṃ; tena tasya dūto'nupreṣitaḥ; sakarkaśaṃ ca likhitaṃ: tvayā pūrvamanujñātameva; yadi yathāpratijñātaṃ karoṣi ityevaṃ kuśalaṃ; no cedyatte balaṃ vīryaṃ parākramas॰॰॰ tenāvatiṣṭhasva; eṣo'hamāgataḥ rāṣṭrāpamardaṃ karomīti; mahābalasamudito'sau rājā; sa śrutvā vyathitaḥ; amātyān saṃnipātya pṛcchati: bhavantaḥ mama tena rājñā evaṃ likhitaṃ; kathamatra pratipattavyamiti; te kathayanti: deva abhiṣicyatāṃ rājyābhinandī yauvarājye; sa kathayati: bhavantaḥ naitadyuktaṃ jyeṣṭhān rājyābhinandinaḥ kumārān pratyākhyāya kanīyaso
rājyābhiṣecanaṃ; te kathayanti: deva udīrṇabalavāhano (a 358 )'sau rājā; sthānametadvidyate yadāgatya niyataṃ rāṣṭrāpamardaṃ kariṣyati; abhiṣicyatāṃ rājyābhinandī rājyaiśvaryādhipatye; pravāsyantāṃ kumārā rājyād; rājā kathayati: bhavantaḥ kathamadūṣiṇo'napakāriṇaḥ kumārā nirvāsyante; deva vayamamātyā hitādhānatatparāḥ adūṣiṇo'napakāriṇaḥ pravāsayāmaḥ; dūṣiṇamapakāriṇaṃ pratiṣṭhāpayāmaḥ; rājā apyupekṣya tūṣṇīmavasthitaḥ; amātyāḥ saṃnipatya parasparaṃ saṃjalpaṃ kartumārabdhāḥ: bhavanta upāyasaṃvidhānaṃ kartavyaṃ yena rājā kumāreṣu vimukhī bhavati; tatastairudyānaṃ śodhayitvā citramupacitraṃ kāritaṃ; surabhidhūpaghaṭikopanibaddhamāmuktadāmapaṭṭakalāpaṃ nānāpuṣpāvakīrṇaṃ ramaṇīyaṃ; tatastairamātyaistadudyānaṃ tathābhisaṃskṛtaṃ dūrāddṛṣṭaṃ; te kumārāścapalādudyānābhimukhaṃ saṃprasthitāḥ; amātyā udyānaśobhāṃ kārayitvā nirgatāḥ; kumāraiḥ pṛṣṭāḥ kasyedamudyānam (29) iti; te kathayanti devasya; te pratinivartitumārabdhāḥ; amātyāḥ kathayanti: kumārāḥ praviśata kimarthaṃ nivartatha iti; te kathayanti devakīyamudyānaṃ; kathaṃ praviśāma iti; amātyāḥ kathayanti: devo krīḍetkumāro ko'tra virodhaḥ; te praviśya krīḍitumārabdhāḥ; amātyai rājābhihitaḥ: deva udyānaṃ śobhanaṃ parikarmīkṛtaṃ; kālo devasya draṣṭumiti; rājā saṃprasthitaḥ; aśrauṣīdudyāne kolāhalaṃ śabdaṃ; śrutvā ca punaramātyān pṛcchati: bhavanta udyāne kolāhalaḥ śabdaḥ śrūyate; ko'trāvatiṣṭhate; amātyāḥ kathayanti: deva kumārāḥ; yadyevaṃ parityaktā mayā kumārāḥ; amātyāḥ pādayornipatya kathayanti: deva kṣamyatāṃ kumārāṇāṃ; parityajyantāmiti; rājā kathayati evaṃ bhavatviti; te pravāsayitumārabdhāḥ rājñaḥ pādayornipatya kathayanti: deva yadyevaṃ yo'smābhiḥ sārdhaṃ parijano gacchati sa yathā na nivāryate tathājñāṃ dātumarhasi; rājñā ājñā dattā; te saṃprasthitāḥ; anuraktajanapadāste; taiḥ sārdhaṃ mahājanakāyaḥ saṃprasthitaḥ; saptadivasaṃ potalakasya nagaradvāramapāvṛtaṃ sthitaṃ janakāyasya nirgacchataḥ; amātyai rājñe niveditaṃ: deva yadi nagarasya dvāraṃ nāvriyate na cirātpotalakaṃ nirāvāsaṃ bhavatīti; yadyevaṃ dvārāṇyāvṛṇuta; tataste kumārāḥ svakasvakā bhaginīrādāyānupūrveṇa himavatpārśvaṃ nadyā bhagīrathyāstīraṃ kapilasya riṣerāśramapadasya nātidūramanuprāptāḥ; te tasmiṃśchākhāparṇakuṭīrakāṇi kṛtvā vāsaṃ kalpitavantaḥ mṛgāṃśca praghātya praghātya jīvikāṃ kalpayanti; triṣkālaṃ ca kapilasya riṣerāśramapadamupasaṃkrāmanti; abhinavayauvanamadākṣiptāḥ kāmarāgeṇātyarthaṃ bādhyamānāḥ utpāṇḍūtpāṇḍūkāḥ kṛśālakāḥ (a 359 ) saṃvṛttāḥ; yāvadapareṇa samayena kapilena riṣiṇā tathāvidhā dṛṣṭāḥ pṛṣṭāśca: kasmādyūyamutpāṇḍūtpāṇḍukāḥ; te kathayanti: maharṣe kāmarāgeṇātīva bādhyāmahe; sa kathayati: svakasvakā bhaginīstyaktvā vaimātṛkābhirbhaginībhiḥ sārdhaṃ vāsaṃ kalpayata; labhyaṃ maharṣe asmābhirevaṃ kartuṃ; labhyaṃ
bhavanto yathāpitatkṣatriyai rājyaparibhraṣṭaiḥ; tataste riṣivacanaṃ pramāṇamiti kṛtvā kāmarāgādhyavasitāḥ prītiprāmodyajātāḥ vaimātṛkābhirbhaginībhiḥ sārdhaṃ (30) krīḍanti ramante paricārayanti; teṣāṃ tābhiḥ saṃkrīḍatāṃ ramamāṇānāṃ paricārayatāṃ putrā duhitaraśca jātāḥ; te vṛddhiṃ gatāḥ
