The Sanskrit edition of the ### (lit. “the sutra of the lotus of compassion”) is an ancient Mahayana scripture devoted to Buddha Padmottara, possibly dated to as early as the 3rd century A.D. The Karunapundarika-sutra praises Shakyamuni’s compassionate activities in the Kaliyuga (the degenerate period). Alternative titles: Karuṇāpuṇḍarīkasūtra (करुणापुण्डरीकसूत्र), Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka sūtra (करुणापुण्डरीक सूत्र, Karunapundarika-sutra).

atha samudrareṇurbrāhmaṇastṛtīyaṃ rājaputramindragaṇaṃ nāmamantrayati sma / peyālaṃ pūrvavat, pratigṛhyāñjaliṃ ratnagarbhaṃ tathāgatametadavocat - "yanmayā bhagavān sarvopakaraṇairupasthitaḥ sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṅghena, yacca me kāyavāṅmanaḥ sucaritaṃ, idaṃ cānumodanāsahagataṃ puṇyaskandhaṃ, etatsarvamanuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau pariṇāmayāmi / na tu kliṣṭe buddhakṣetre'nuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbudhyeyaṃ, na cātikṣipraṃ prāpnuyāṃ / na yāvaccāhamanuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbudhyeyaṃ tāvadbodhicaryāṃ caran, daśasu dikṣvanantāparyanteṣu anyeṣu lokadhātuṣu buddhān bhagavataḥ paśyeyaṃ / ye mayā prathamaṃ bodhāya samādāpitā yeṣāṃ mayā tatprathamaṃ bodhicittamutpāditaṃ bodhicitte pratiṣṭhāpitāḥ, pāramitāsu ca ye mayā samādāpitā niveśitā pratiṣṭhāpitā bodhicaryāṃ caratā, tān ahaṃ divyena cakṣuṣā gaṅgānadīvālikāsame buddhakṣetre paramāṇurajaḥsameṣu buddhakṣetreṣu buddhān bhagavato dharman deśayataḥ paśyeyaṃ, ye mayā bodhāya samādāpitāḥ / evamahaṃ bodhisattvacaryāṃ caran buddhakāryaṃ kuryāṃ, tāvadahaṃ bodhisattvacaryāṃ careyaṃ sattvānāmāśayapariśodhayamānaḥ yāvantaḥ kecit sattvā (KpSū 125) mama buddhakṣetra upapadyeran ta evaṃvidhāḥ syuḥ tadyathā brahmakāyikā devāḥ; samanantaraprādurbhūtānāṃ evaṃrūpāṃ smṛtiṃ pratilabheyurnāsmākaṃ pratirūpaṃ ye vayaṃ kavaḍīkārāhāramāharema, (KpSū 126) yannūnaṃ vayamanyāsu lokadhātuṣu gatvā buddhān bhagavatastiṣṭhato yāpayato'nenāhāreṇa pratimānayāmo buddhaśrāvakāṃśca duḥkhitaṃ ca janaṃ pratimānayāmaḥ, pretabhavaneṣu ca gatvā kṣuttarṣaprajvalitagātrān sattvān anenāhāreṇa pratimānayāmaḥ" / sahacittotpādena te bodhisattvā mahāsattvā acintyacāritravatīṃ nāma samādhiṃ pratilabheyuḥ, tasya ca samādheḥ pratilābhādasajjanā daśasu dikṣvaprameyeṣvanyeṣu buddhakṣetreṣu gaccheyuḥ, tiṣṭhato yāpayato buddhān bhagavata āhāreṇa pratimānayeyuḥ śrāvakāṃścānyāṃśca sattvāṃ, prītyā pratimānya dharmadeśanāṃ kṛtvā tenaiva pūrvabhaktena svabuddhakṣetraṃ āgaccheyuḥ / evaṃ cīvararatnāni, yāvat tenaiva pūrvabhaktena svakaṃ buddhakṣetramāgatyānyonyaṃ cīvareṇa prāvarayeyuḥ / yāvanti ca tatra buddhakṣetre teṣāṃ bodhisattvānāmupabhogaḥ paribhogā bhaveyustaiḥ sarvairbuddhaiḥ śrāvakaiścānyaiśca sattvaiḥ sahasādhāraṇaṃ kṛtvā paścādātmanā paribhuñjeyuḥ / aṣṭākṣaṇavarjitaṃ ca buddhakṣetraṃ bhavet, na ca tatra duḥkhaśabdo bhavet, (KpSū 127) na śikṣāgrahaṇaśabdaḥ, āpattivyutthānaśabdo'pi na bhavet / anekaratnaśatasahasropacitaṃ tadbuddhakṣetraṃ syāt, anekaratnapratyuptaṃ maṇisandarśanasadṛśaṃ bhavet, yāni maṇiratnāni daśasu dikṣvadṛṣṭapūrvāṇi tāni aśrutapūrvāṇi tāni maṇiratnāni pracareyuḥ, yeṣāṃ maṇiratnānāṃ nāmadheye nirdiśyamāne varṣakoṭyo'pi kṣayaṃ gaccheyuḥ / yaśca bodhisattvaḥ ākāṅkṣeta svarṇamayaṃ eva buddhakṣetraṃ paśyeyaṃ tasya svarṇamayaṃ eva tiṣṭheta / yo rūpyamayamākāṅkṣeta sa rūpyamayaṃ paśyet, na cāsya suvarṇamayaṃ parihāyeyaṃ, peyālaṃ pūrvavat / ya ākāṅkṣeta sphatikamayaṃ vaiḍūryamayaṃ aśmagarbhamayaṃ lohitamuktāmayaṃ musālagalvamayaṃ evaṃvidhaṃ tadbuddhakṣetraṃ paśyema, ityākāṅkṣeyuḥ / agarumayaṃ tagaramayaṃ tamālapatramayaṃ yo bodhisattva ākāṅkṣeduragasāracandanamayaṃ goṣīrṣacandanamayaṃ tadbuddhakṣetraṃ draṣṭuṃ tasya tathaiva syāt / yathā yathā yādṛśamākāṅkṣeyuḥ tathā tathā tādṛśaṃ syāt; na caiko dvitīyasya praṇidhiḥ syāt, sarveṣāṃ eva praṇidhiḥ paripūryate / na ca tatra buddhakṣetre sūryācandramasau (KpSū 128) prajñāyeyātāṃ, svayaṃ prabhāśca tatra bodhisattvāḥ pratyājāyeyuḥ, anyāṃ yādṛśīṃ prabhāmākāṅkṣeran tādṛśīmutsṛjeyuḥ, antato buddhakṣetrakoṭīnayutaśatasahasreṣvapi / na ca tatra buddhakṣetre rātridivasānāṃ nāmadheyamapi prajñāyate, anyatra kusumavikasanatayā / na ca tatra buddhakṣetre śītoṣṇaṃ prajñāyate na vyādhirna glānyaṃ na jarāmaraṇamanyatra yo bodhisattva ākāṅkṣedbodhimabhisaṃboddhuṃ so'nyatra lokadhātāvuṣitvā āyuḥ kṣapayitvā bodhimabhisaṃbudhyeta / na tatra buddhakṣetre maraṇaṃ bhaveyuḥ, anuttaraparinirvāṇena uparyantarīkṣe tathāgataparinirvāṇaṃ syāt / yādṛgjātrīyāṃśca bodhisattva upabhogaparibhogāmākāṅkṣeran tādṛgjātīyā abhinirvarteyuḥ / sarvatra ca buddhakṣetre gaganatale tūryakoṭīniyutaśatasahasrā vādyeyuḥ / na ca tebhyastūryebhyaḥ kāmopasaṃhitāḥ śabdā niścareyuḥ, anyatra pāramitā śabdā niścareyuḥ, buddhaśabdo dharmaśabdaḥ saṅghaśabdo bodhisattvapiṭakadharmaparyāyaśabdo niścaret / yathādhimuktā bodhisattvāstādṛgjātīyāṃ śabdāṃ śṛṇuyuḥ / (KpSū 129) bodhisattvacārikāmahaṃ bhagavaṃścaramāṇo yāvan mayāprameyeṣvasaṃkhyeyeṣu buddhakoṭīnayutaśatasahasreṣu buddhakṣetraguṇavyūhā dṛṣṭāste vyūhāste'laṅkārāstāni liṅgāni tāni nimittāni tāni sthānāni tāni praṇidhānāni sarva eva mama buddhakṣetre praviśeyuḥ, sthāpayitvā śrāvakapratyekabuddhavyūhāṃ pañcakaṣāyikāṃśca buddhakṣetraguṇavyūhāṃ / na ca tatra buddhakṣetre narakatiryakpretāḥ prajñāyeyurna sumerurna cakravāḍamahācakravāḍā na śīlāpāṃśuparvatāḥ prajñāyeyuḥ, na mahāsamudrā; na cānye kāṣṭhavṛkṣā bhaveyurdivyātikrāntairnānāvṛkṣaistadbuddhakṣetramākīrṇaṃ syāt, anyatra divyaiḥ kusumairmāndāravamahāmāndāravairna ca tatra durgandhaṃ syānnānāgandhairudārodāraistadbuddhakṣetraṃ sphuṭaṃ syāt / sarve tatraikajātipratibaddhā bodhisattvā utpadyeran, na tatraikasattvaḥ syādyastataścyavitvānyatra pratyājāyeta, anyatra tuṣitebhyaḥ tataścyuto'nuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbudhyeta / tāvadahaṃ bhadanta bhagavan bodhisattvacaryāṃ cariṣyāmi yāvannaivaṃvidhaṃ mahāpuruṣakāramabhiniṣpādayiṣyāmi / evaṃrūpaṃ buddhakṣetraṃ sthāpayiṣyāmi, evaṃrūpaiḥ śuddhāśayaiḥ sattvairekajātipratibaddhairbodhisattvaiḥ (KpSū 130) sārdhaṃ tadbuddhakṣetramākīrṇaṃ pratiṣṭhāpayiṣyāmi / na tatra bodhisattvaḥ syād yo na mayā prathamaṃ bodhāya samādāpitaḥ syāt; sarve te tatra bodhisattvāḥ pratyājāyeyuḥ ye mayā prathamaṃ bodhāya samādāpitāḥ pāramitāsu niveśitāḥ; tatraivedaṃ buddhakṣetramantargataṃ kuryāṃ sarve cāmī duḥkhā praśamayeyaṃ / bodhisattvabhūto'haṃ bhadanta bhagavan evaṃrūpaṃ puruṣakāraṃ niṣpādayeyaṃ, tataḥ paścāt tatra buddhakṣetre'nuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbudhyeyaṃ / daśacāturdvīpikasahasrapramāṇo me bodhivṛkṣaḥ pariṇāhena syāt, saptaratnavicitrasandarśano nāma bhavet / daśatrisāhasraḥ samantapariṇāhena; tasya ca bodhivṛkṣasya gandhenābhayā ca kṛtsanaṃ buddhakṣetraṃ sphuṭaṃ syāt; tasya mūle pañcacāturdvīpikapramāṇaṃ me nānāratnavicitraṃ vajrāsanaṃ syāt, praśamakṣamasuvicitrajñānagandhasamavasaraṇaṃ nāma bhaveccaturaśītiyojanānyuccatvena; tasyāhaṃ bodhivṛkṣasya mūle vajrāsane niṣīdeyaṃ, paryaṅkamābhujya tenaiva muhūrtenānuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbudhyeyaṃ yāvat parinirvāṇakālaṃ tatparyaṅkaṃ na (KpSū 131) bhindyāṃ na muceyaṃ na tasmād bodhivṛkṣamūlāduttiṣṭheyaṃ / bodhivṛkṣamūlastha evāhaṃ vajrāsane niṣaṇṇo'haṃ nirmitān buddhān bodhisattvāṃśca gaṇanātikrānteṣvanyeṣu buddhakṣetreṣu preṣayeyaṃ, ekaiko buddha ekapūrvabhaktena sattvānāṃ dharmaṃ deśayet, tenaiva pūrvabhaktena gaṇanātikrāntān sattvān anuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau samādāpayeyuḥ pratiṣṭhāpayeyuḥ avaivartikāṃ sthāpayeyuḥ, evaṃ nirmitā bodhisattvā bodhisattvakāryaṃ kuryuḥ / bodhiprāptasya me gaṇanātikrānteṣu daśasu dikṣvanyāsu lokadhātuṣu mama kāyo dṛṣyet, yeṣāṃ ca sattvānāṃ mama kāyo lakṣaṇālaṅkṛtaścakṣurindriyasyābhāsamāgacchet sarve te sattvā niyatā bhaveyuranuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau, yāvad bodhiparinirvāṇena te sattvā avirahitā bhaveyurbuddhairbhagavadbhiḥ / na tatrendriyavikalā bhaveyurye ca tatra bodhisattvā māṃ draṣṭuṃ iccheyuste yena yenaiva gaccheyuḥ parivarteyuḥ caṃkrameyurniṣīdeyuḥ tiṣṭheyuḥ, sarve te bodhisattvāḥ samanantarotpāditena buddhanamaskāracittena māṃ bodhivṛkṣaniṣaṇṇaṃ paśyeyuḥ, dṛṣṭvā ca yasya dharmasaṃśayaḥ syāt so'sya sahadarśanena vigacchettīrṇavacikitsāḥ syādanupadiṣṭasya dharmapadasyārthamājāneyuḥ / apramāṇaṃ me (KpSū 132) āyurbhavet na śakyate kenacid gaṇayituṃ anyatra sārvajñena jñānena, apramānāśca tatra bodhisattvā bhaveyuḥ / yasmiṃśca kṣaṇe'haṃ tatra buddhakṣetre'nuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbudhyeyaṃ tasmin kṣaṇe tatra buddhakṣetre bodhisattvā muṇḍāḥ kāṣāyavastrāḥ saṃbhaveyuḥ, yāvan mama parinirvāṇānna cātra buddhakṣetra ekasattvo'pi dīrghakeśaḥ syāt śuklaprāvaraṇo , sarva eva śramaṇavarṇāḥ syuḥ śramaṇapratirūpāstiṣṭheyuḥ" /

bhagavān āha - "sādhu sādhu satpuruṣa, tvamapi paṇḍito vyakto medhāvī atīvaśobhanaṃ te praṇidhānaṃ kṛtaṃ, atīvaguṇavāstvamatīvajñānavān; yatastvaṃ kulaputra sarvasattvānāmarthāyaivaṃrūpāṃ pravarāṃ praśastāṃ matiṃ kṛtavān pravaro buddhakṣetraguṇavyūhaḥ parigṛhītaḥ, tataste kulaputra mañjuśrīrnāma bhavatu / bhaviṣyasi tvaṃ mañjuśrīranāgate'dhvani atikrāntayordvayornadīvālikāsamayorasaṃkhyeyayoḥ praviṣṭe ca tṛtīye'saṃkhyeye dakṣiṇasyāṃ diśi śuddhavirajaḥsannicayo nāma lokadhāturbhaviṣyati, tatra ca sahālokadhāturantargatā bhaviṣyati, anupraviṣṭaśca evaṃrūpayā guṇavyūhayā tadbuddhakṣetraṃ prādurbhaviṣyati / tatra tvaṃ mañjuśrīranuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbhotsyase, (KpSū 133) samantadarśī nāma tathāgato bhaviṣyasi arhan samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ / evaṃrūpā ca te bodhisattvaparṣadbhaviṣyati sarve caite praṇidhānāstvayi saṃpatsyante yathā tvayā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtaṃ; bodhisattvabhūtena tatastvaṃ bahubuddhakoṭīṣvavaruptakuśalamūlo bhaviṣyasi, āśayapariśodhakaśca kleśapramardakaḥ, ye ca te mañjuśrīssattvā nāmaṃ śroṣyanti teṣāṃ sarvakarmāvaraṇakṣayo bhaviṣyati, kuśalavivardhakaśca bhaviṣyasi" /

mañjuśrīrāha - "yadi me bhagavannevaṃrūpā āśāparipūrirbhavediti yathā me praṇidhānaṃ kṛtaṃ tathā caiva māṃ buddhā bhagavanto vyākurvantu ye daśasu dikṣvaprameyeṣvasaṃkhyeyeṣu lokadhātuṣu tiṣṭhanti dhriyanti yāpayanti sattvānāṃ ca dharmaṃ deśayanti / tathāprameyāsaṃkhyeyā buddhakṣetrāḥ prakaṃpantu / sarvasattvāścaivaṃrūpeṇa sukhena samarpitā bhavantu, tadyathā dvitīyadhyānakrīḍāvyūhasamāpannasya bodhisattvasya / tathāprameyāsaṃkhyeyebhyo buddhakṣetrebhyo divyamāndāravapuṣpāṇyabhipravarṣantu, tebhyaśca māndāravebhya evaṃrūpaḥ śabdo niścaratu yaduta buddhaśabdo dharmaśabdaḥ saṅghaśabdaḥ (KpSū 134) pāramitāśabdaḥ balavaiśāradyaśabdaśca niścaratu / yadā cāhaṃ bhagavataḥ pañcamaṇḍalena pādau vandeya tadā caivaṃrūpaṃ nimittaṃ prādurbhavet" / yadā ca mañjuśriyā kumārabhūtena bhagavataḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtaṃ tadā tatkṣaṇādevamaprameyāsaṃkhyeyā buddhakṣetrāḥ prakaṃpitā, divyāni ca māndāravāṇyabhipravarṣitāni, sarvasattvāścaivaṃrūpeṇa sukhena samarpitā abhavanyathā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtaṃ / ye ca bodhisattvā mahāsattvāsteṣāṃ buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ dharmaṃ śṛṇvanti te tān buddhān bhagavataḥ paripṛcchanti, "ko'tra hetuḥ kaḥ pratyayaḥ evaṃrūpāṇāṃ nimittānāṃ prādurbhāvāya?" te ca buddhā bhagavanto mañjuśriyaṃ kumārabhūtaṃ vyākurvanti anuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau /

bhagavān āha -
"uttiṣṭha pravaramati viśālabuddhe vyākṛtastvaṃ daśadiśi lokanāthaiḥ /
calitā kṣitiḥ tarpitāḥ sattvāḥ saukhyaiḥ puṣpāḥ pravṛṣṭā bheṣyase buddha loka" // iti //
