The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Sulba-sutra with the commentaries of Kapardin, Karavinda and Sundararaja. The Sulbasutras are considered Vedic appendices and deals with the ancient Indian science of Mathematics and Geometry, by instructing the construction of fire-altars, among others. vihārayogān vyākhyāsyāmaḥ || ĀpŚus_1.1 ||
vihiyante'sminnagnaya iti vihārāḥ prāgvaṃśādayo gārha patyādayaś ca /
yujyate'neneti yogaḥ rajjuviśeṣaḥ / vihārāṇāṃ yogo vihārayogaḥ / viharaṇameva vā vihāraḥ /
teṣāṃ yogo vihārayogaḥ / tasya kṛtsnaṃ pratipādanamityarthaḥ / yogāniti bahuvacanaṃ bahubhiḥ prakārairdarśayitum / darśanaṃ ca prādhānya pratipacyartham / yathā rathādayo niyatāṅgapramāṇā ekasiminn aṅge'pi mātrayā vihīyamāne samyakū na gacchanti evamagnyāyata nādīnyapi mātrayā vihīyamānāni sādhanabhāvaṃ na gacchanti tasmādyatnena sampādanīyāni. sarvatra vijñāyata iti śrutīnāmupanyāsātsarvathā āyāmādaya iktaireva margaiḥsamyaksampādanīyāḥ / āyatanānāṃ bhreṣe ca prāyaśvittena bhavitavyam /
amumevārthaṃ pradarśayituṃ śulbāntare "athātaḥ' śabdau prayuktau--"athāto vihārayogān' iti /
āditastāvaddiśāṃ grahaṇaṃ vaktavyamanenāyāryeṇa noktam / tacchulbāntarato grāhyam / ""kṛttikāḥ khalvimāḥ prācīṃ diśaṃ na paricahati / tāsāṃ darśanena māpayedityekam / śroṇādarśa nena māpayedityekam / citnāsvātyorantarālenetyaparam / "iti bhagapatā bodhāyanena prāgvaṃśamānamadhikṛtyoktam / kṛttikādayo yatra nilīyante sā prācī digiti citrāsvātyor madhye udakamapasthāpya pradibimbaṃ dṛṣṭva grāhyam / atha vā yatra devayajanaṃ, mṛjjalena taṃ deśaṃ samīkṛtya madhye śaṅkuṃ nihatya śaṅkupramāṇayā ravjjā maṇḍalaṃ parilikhya śaṅkucchā yāgraṃ pūrvāhne yatra maṇḍalalekhāṃ spṛśati tatra śaṅkuṃ nihatya nirgamavelāyāṃ cāparahṇe / tau pūrvāparau / sūkṣmamicchan śvobhūte-pūrvāhte śaṅkucchāyāgrarekhāyāmeva lakṣaṇaṃ kṛtvā śaṅkulakṣaṇayorantarālaṃ pratīcyāṃ diśi yaḥśaṅkuḥ taṃ pratsapasārayet upakramadeśaṃ prati /
āpastambaśulbasūtravyākhyā karavindīyā
omityekākṣārākhyeyaṃ vande vāṅnasātigam /
paśyanti kavayo yaddhi tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṃ padam /
lakṣmīsahāyamatasīkusumacchavi śāśvatam /
jyotirmeṃ hṛdaye bhūyātāsadā rājīvalocanam //
āpastambāya munaye namo vedārthabhūmayo /
yatsūtrasaktāstiṣṭhante yajñaśrutikumārikāḥ /
tatsūtraśulbavyākhyeyamakṣarārthāvabodhinī /
karavindādhipenādya kriyate bhāṣyakṛnmate //
yajñavyākhyāpratijñāṃ kurvatā bhagavatā'pastambena vyākhyeyatayā haviryajñāḥ somayajñāḥ pākayajñāś ca pratijñātā vyākhyātāś ca / tatra tāvadaiṣṭikasaumikapāśubandhikadārvīhaumikāḥ samaviṣama dhanirmaṇḍalacaturaśratrayaśranānāśrayo gārhapatyāyatanaprabhṛticityeṣṭakāparyantā niyataparimaṇadeśaviśeṣāstatratatroktāḥ, te'pi mātavyā iti tadvimānaṃ prati sādhanabhūtaravjjādīnāṃ sādhanabhūtasyaitāvatī rajjuretāvataḥ kṣetrasya karaṇīti svarūpamātreṇa jñātumaśakyatvāttatpratipādanamapaśyaṃ kartavyamiti yajñavyākhyānānantaraṃ vihārayogavyākhyā kriyate--
vihāro viharaṇam / yogastatsādhanam / vihārāṇāṃ yogāḥ
vihārayogāstānvyākhyāsyāmaḥ pratipādayiṣyāmaḥ / vipūrvo haratiḥ
krīḍāprajvalanabandhanasaṃcaraṇavimānādyanekārthakaḥ / tatkriyāviśeṣasambandhādeva deśādiṣu tatratatrārthe vihāravyapadeśaḥ / atra tuvimānavācī / yujiś ca dvividhaḥ--samādhivācī
saṃbandhavācī ca / atra tu samādhivācī / vedyādeḥsamyagavasthānaṃ samādhiḥ, "sa samāviḥ' ityatra vakṣyate / yujyante ebhiriti yogāḥ, viharaṇopāyabhūtā ravjjādayaḥ /
"pṛṣṭhyāntayoḥ' ityādinā vimātavyasya vedyādikṣetrasya śroṇyaṃsānāṃ vividhasaṃpādanāvacchedo viharaṇam / tatsādhanabhūtā ravjjādayo vihārayogāḥ, tānvacākhyāsyāmaḥ / vyārūyānaṃ nāma sati sandehe balavatā hetunopapādya vivaraṇaṃ, yathā-
"sama caturaśrā anupapadatvācchabdasya mānārtheṣu yathākāmiśabdārthasya viśayitvāt, ityevamādikam / nanu kuto vihārasya bhāvavā citvaṃ, kuto vā tasya vimānaparyāyatvaṃ, kuto viharaṇasya vedyādisaṃbandhaḥ, kuto vā tatra ravjjādīnāṃ karaṇatvaṃ, kuto vā
yujeḥsamādhivacanatā, kathaṃ vā ravjjādiṣu yogavāyavahāraḥ? ucyate--"uktaṃ viharaṇaṃ "vyākhyātaṃ viharaṇam' iti bhāvapratyayanirdeśāt bhāvavacano vihāraśabdaḥ
"tadekaravjjā viharaṇaṃ' "ravjjā vā vimāya' iti ravjjakārye vimānaviharaṇayoratra
darśanādubhayoḥ paryāya tvām / "etāvanti jñeyāni vediviharaṇāni bhavanti' ityanena viharaṇasya vedyādisambandhaḥ / "āgantucaturthamāyāmaśvākṣṇayārajjuḥ pramāṇamātrī rajjuṃ' iti tatra tatra karaṇīṣu rajju vyapadeśitvavaśāt pārśvamānī tiryaṅbhānīdi karaṇyaṣṭādaśakaraṇīti tatratatra rutrīliṅganirdeśāt rajjveti tṛtīyāśruteś ca
rajjūnāṃ viharaṇe sādhanatvaṃ ata eva hetoretatkarma śulbamityācakṣate / ācāryā etaṃ grantharāśiṃ "sa samādhiḥ' "athāparo yogaḥ' iti vakṣyanti / tena jñāyate yujeḥsamādhivacanatā / yujerarthasya samādherviharaṇasādhyatvāt / viharaṇasādhanānyapi yogasādhanāni bhavantīti ravjjādayo yogā ityucyante / vi hārayogaparatāṃ jñāpayituṃ viharaṇasādhaneṣu yogavyavahāraḥ / yogagrahaṇaṃ kimarthaṃ ? sādhanatvapratītyarthamityuktam /
evaṃ tarhi na vaktavyaṃ darśapūrṇamāsau vyākhyāsyāma ityādiṣu pratijñānantaraṃ sādhanānyeva vyākhyeyatayāvagamyante / evaṃ tarhi yogagrahaṇaṃ mānasādhaneṣu prādhānyakhyāpanārthaṃ / kiṃ tat prādhānyam ? yadyapi padaveṇvādīni mānasādhanāni santi, tadhāpi tairvimāne bahu prayatnasādhyā samyagvedyādikṣetrasamādhisiddhiḥ, pajjusīrādibhir vimāne tasyāḥ siddhirīṣatkarītyetadatra prādhānyaṃ / nanu ravjjādīnāṃ viharaṇasādhanatvaṃ lokato'pi setsyati, kimarthamidamucyate vihārayogānvyākhyāsyāma iti? ucyate--satyaṃ setsyati / tathāpi
kālavaddeśasyāpyaṅgatvāduktapramāṇasya deśasya tilamātrapra māṇādapi nyūnādhikabhāve
satyaṅgavaiguṇyaṃ syāditi manyamāna ācāryo ravjjādīnāmasandigdhamīṣatkaramupāyabhāvaṃ svayameva pratipādayitumidaṃ brūte / ato nyūnādhikabhāve pariharaṇīye sati pramādādasāmatharyādvā yadi bhreṣa upajāyate tatrāvaśyaṃ prāyāśvittaṃ kartavyamityetadarthamidamucyate "vihārayogānvyākhyāsyāmaḥ' iti /
athavā vihriyanta iti vihārāḥ / yogāś ca tatsaṃpādanopāyabhūtāsta eva rajjvādayaḥ / atra kecinniyatadiksaṃyogādīnāṃ vedyādīnāmajñātadigviśeṣaiḥ puruṣairviharaṇaṃ kartum aśakyamiti digviśeṣajñāpanārthamādāveva diśaṃ lakṣaṇīkurvanti /
yathā'ha bhagavān kātyāyanaḥ-- "same śaṅkuṃ nikhāya śaṅkusaṃmitayā ravjjā maṇḍalaṃ parilikhya yatra lekhayoḥśaṅkagravacchāyā nipatati sā prācī / tatra śaṅkuṃ nikhāya tadanantaraṃ ravjjābhyasya pāśau kṛtvā śakṅvoḥ pāśau pratimucya lakṣaṇena dakṣiṇāpāyamya madhyamaśaṅkurevamuttarataḥsodīcī' iti /
asyārthaḥ--atha yatra śucau deśe devayajanaṃ kīraṣyan bhavati taṃ deśaṃ jalena samīkṛtya madhye śaṅkuṃ nihatya śaṅkusaṃmitāmekataḥ pāśāṃ rajjuṃ kṛtvā śakṅau pratimucya tayā maṇḍalaṃ parilirūya maṇḍalarekhāyāṃ pūrvāhne yatra śakṅvagracchāyā nipatati tatra binduṃ kuryāt tau pūrvaparau bindū sā ca pracī dik /
bindvordvayoḥśaṅkuṃ nikhāya tadantaradviguṇāṃ rajjumubhayataḥpāśāṃ kṛtvā madhye lakṣaṇaṃ kṛtvā śakṅvoḥ pāśau pratimucya lakṣaṇena dakṣiṇāpāyamya lakṣaṇe śaṅkuṃ kuryād evam uttarato'pi lakṣaṇenāpāyamya śaṅkuṃ kuryāt / tau śaṅkū dakṣiṇottarau sā udīcī digiti / tathā jyotirjñāne /
iṣṭamaṇḍalamadhyasthaśaṅkucchāyāgravṭattayoḥ /
yogābhyāṃ kṛtamatsyena jñeye yāmyottare diśau' iti / evamanyairapi bahuprakāraṃ diśāṃ grahaṇaṃ tatra tatroktamiti
prasiddhatvādevācāryeṇeha noktaṃ /
pramīyate'neneti vyutpacyā pārśvamānyādīnāṃ pramāṇatve siddhe pramāṇāmiti paribhāṣyate //
āpastambena yo'yaṃ vyaraci bhagavatā śulbasaṃjño gabhīraḥ praśno'rthaṃ tasya bhāṣyaprabhṛtiṣu kathitaṃ vīkṣya kṛtsnam /
saṃkṣipyobdodhanārthaṃ kuśikakulanidhermādhavāryasya yaṣṭuḥ putraḥ śulbapradīpaṃ vivaraṇamadhunā sundaro nirmimīte //
vihāro viharaṇaṃ, caturaśrādirūpeṇa bhmeḥ karaṇam / tasya yogāḥ upāyāḥ /
