Chapter 223 - Another story of a bear of a poor man

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo vārāṇāsyāṃ nagaryāmanyatamo daridrapuruṣaḥ prativasati; sa kāṣṭhāni vikrīya jīvikāṃ kalpayati: so'pareṇa samayena kālyamevotthāya paraśumābhaṅgīmādāya kāṣṭhārthī vanaṃ gataḥ; tatparvatapradeśe vividhataruṣaṇḍamaṇḍite nānāpuṣpaphalasamṛddhe aniyatarāśyavasthito bodhisatvaḥ ṛkṣeṣūpapannaḥ; yāvadasau kāṣṭhahārakaḥ kāṣṭhāni paryeṣamāṇaḥ anyatamasmin pradeśe vyāghreṇābhidrutaḥ; maraṇabhayabhīto daivāttaṃ (i 107) vṛkṣamabhirūḍho yasminvṛkṣe sa ṛkṣo bodhisatvastiṣṭhati; sa taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhūyaḥ santrastaḥ; tena mahātmanā samāśvāsya utsaṅgena dhāritaḥ; sa ca vyāghra āhāragṛddhastaṃ vṛkṣatalaṃ naiva muñcati; kathayati (a 463 ) ca: bho mahātmannete manuṣyāḥ kṛṣṇaśirasaḥ akṛtajñāḥ bhavanti; pātayainaṃ; bhakṣayitvā gacchāmi iti; prāyaḥ śaraṇāgatavatsalā anya'pi manuṣyāḥ; prāgeva bodhisatvāḥ; sa kathayati: mamāyaṃ śaraṇāgataḥ; nāhametaṃ pātayāmi iti; tathāpyasau vyāghraḥ māṃsaśoṇitābhilāṣī tiṣṭhatyeva; na tasmādviprakrāmati; athāsau ṛkṣastaṃ puruṣamāha: śrānto'haṃ; tvaṃ tāvattiṣṭha; ahaṃ viśramāmi iti; sa tasyotsaṅganiṣaṇṇaḥ śramakheditapariṣrāntaśca middhamavakrāntaḥ; sa vyāhgraḥ kathayati: bhoḥ puruṣa kiyantaṃ kālaṃ tvayātra sthātavyaṃ? pātayainaṃ; bhakṣayitvā gamiṣyāmi: iti; sa nirghṛṇahṛdayaḥ pāpakarmā tyaktaparalokaḥ saṃlakṣayati: śobhanameṣa kathayati; kiyantaṃ kālaṃ mayātra sthātavyaṃ? pātayāmi iti; sa tena pātitaḥ; tena mahātmanā patatābhihitaṃ nai te kiṃ citdusse mi ityuktvā patitaḥ; vyāghreṇānayena vyasanamāpāditaḥ; sa tasya saṃdhāya bhāṣitaṃ śrutvā saṃlakṣayati: mamāyaṃ kenacitsaṃvibhāgaṃ kartukāmaḥ, yenaivaṃ kathayati iti; tasya tṛṣṇāndhasya pralāpo lagnaḥ; kṣiptacittastena tenānvāhiṇḍannevamāha: nai te kiṃ citdusse mi iti; sa jñātibhirgṛhaṃ nītaḥ; pralapatyeva na santiṣṭhate; te vidyāmantradhāriṇo bhūtacikitsakānanyāṃśca śramaṇabrāhmaṇān suhṛtsambandhibāndhavān pṛcchati; te bahudhā kathayanti; na kaścitcikitsāṃ karoti; tena khalu samayena vārāṇasyāṃ nātidūre āśramapade vividhataruṣaṇḍamaṇḍite puṣpaphalasalilasaṃpanne anekavihaganikūjite ṛṣiḥ paṃcābhijñaḥ prativasati; tasya puruṣasya jñātayastaṃ puruṣanādāya tasya ṛṣeḥ sakāśaṃ gatāḥ pādayornipatya kathayanti: maharṣe ayamasmākaṃ jñātiḥ; muhurmuhurevaṃ pralapati; kimasya kartavyamiti; pāpakārī ayaṃ satvaḥ; anena durātmanā kṛtopakārī bodhisatvo vyāghrasya purastātpātitaḥ; tena mahātmanā cintitamasmai dharmaṃ deśayāmi iti; so'nena pātitaḥ; tasya patato bhrāntasya daśānāṃ ślokānāmekaikamakṣaraṃ pratibhātaṃ nai te kiṃ citdusse mi iti; tasya ṛṣeḥ śiṣyaḥ (i 108) kathayati:
upādhyāya kathayasva tāvatkīdṛśaste ślokāḥ iti; sa ṛṣiranupūrveṇa tān ślokān kathayitumārabdhaḥ:
kāṣṭaṃ bata loke'sminadharmaḥ khalu dāruṇaḥ |
asatyeṣu manuṣyeṣu hiṃsā mitreṣu vidyate || 1 ||
naivāsane na śayane nāpi caiva ca caṅkrame |
na kasyāṃcidavasthāyāṃ mitradruksukhamedhate || 2 ||
vāṇī te karuṇārttena tatā caiva bhāṣitā |
tvāṃ dahati durbuddhe khāṇḍavaṃ jvalitaṃ yathā || 3 ||
tena hi tvaṃ pare loke'nubhaviṣyasi vedanām ||
asātāṃ duḥkhasaṃsparśāṃ karma kṛtvā sudāruṇām || 4 ||
heti krandamānastvaṃ raurave bhṛśadāruṇe |
saṃprāpsyasi mahadduḥkhaṃ nihīnamadhamādhama || 5 ||
kiṃ te na prakṛtaṃ karma raudrasyāśubhakarmaṇaḥ |
asatyeṣu manuṣyeṣu hiṃsā mitreṣu vidyate || 6 ||
cittaṃ pāpaṃ vyavasyanti dharmalopo (a 463 ) hi dhāruṇaḥ |
smara ṛkṣaṃ ca vyāghraṃ ca yatpāpaṃ prakṛtaṃ tvayā || 7 ||
durbuddhe tvaṃ na jānīṣe yathā mitreṣu vartitum |
hantāraṃ labhate hantā vairī vairāṇi paśyati || 8 ||
sevitastvaṃ ciraṃ kālaṃ prāpte vyāghramahābhaye |
rakṣitaśca śayānastvaṃ tvayāsau kiṃ na rakṣitaḥ || 9 ||
mitrabhedaṃ paraṃ garhyaṃ bruvate dharmavādinaḥ |
kāyasya bhedāddurbuddhe narakeṣūpapatsyate || 10 || iti
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo? yo'sau ṛkṣaḥ ahameva saḥ tena kālena tena samayena; yo'sau kṛtaghnaḥ satvaḥ eṣa evāsau devadattaḥ tena kālena tena samayena; tadāpyeṣa akṛtajñaḥ akṛtavedī; etarhyapyeṣa akṛtajña akṛtavedī; punarapi yathaiṣa akṛtajña akṛtavedī tacchrūyatāṃ.
