Chapter 224 - The story of the king Śibi

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo śibighoṣāyāṃ rājadhānyāṃ śibirnāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ (i 109) cākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca; sa ca rājā śrāddho bhadraḥ kalyāṇāśayaḥ ātmahitapratipannaḥ kāruṇiko mahātmā dharmakāmaḥ prajāvatsalaḥ sarvapradaḥ sarvaparityāgi nissaṅgaparityāgī mahati ca tyāge vartate; tasya nāsti kiṃcidadattamaparityaktaṃ yaduta śramaṇabrāhmaṇebhyaḥ kṛpaṇebhyo vaṇīpakebhyaḥ adhvagebhyaḥ yācanakebhyaḥ; yadbhūyasā tu glānebhyaḥ ācaritaṃ tasya rājñaḥ; kālyamevotthāya mātāpitarāvabhivādya glānāvalokyanaṃ kṛtvā arthādhikaraṇe niṣīdati; yāvadanyataraḥ puruṣo glānaḥ; sa sarvavaidyapratyākhyāto nirapekṣo jīvite maraṇābhimuktaḥ tena tenānvāhiṇḍamānaḥ śibighoṣāṃ rājadhānīmanuprāptaḥ; tasmiṃśca samaye rājā saṃprāpte vasantakālasamaye saṃpuṣpitaphaliteṣu pādapeṣu haṃsakrauñcamayūraśukākokilajīvañjīvonnādite vanaṣaṇḍe antaḥpuraparivṛtaḥ udyānabhūmiṃ saṃprasthitaḥ; sa ca vyādhitastīvrarujopatāpasaṅjanitadaurmanasyo muhuḥ śvāsoparudhhyamānatanuraśruparyākulekaṇo daṇḍapāṇiḥ śanaiḥ śanai rājñaḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ; śiraḥpraṇāmaṃ kṛtvā kathayati: deva paritrāyasva māmasmādvyādheḥ; prayaccha jīvitamiti; tataḥ śibirājā karuṇadīnavilambitairakṣarairucyamānastadāturavacanaṃ śrutvā kāruṇyādākampitahṛdayaḥ tatra eva pratinivṛttaḥ amātyānāmantrayate: āhūyantāṃ madviṣayanivāsino vaidyāḥ iti; taissarve vaidyā āhūtāḥ; rājña upanītāḥ; tato rājā taṃ puruṣaṃ śabdayitvā kathayati: bhavantaḥ kurutāsya cikitsāmiti; vaidyā vicāryaikamatena kathayanti: deva yaḥ puruṣaḥ janmano na kasyacidruṣitapūrvaḥ tasya rudhireṇa yavāgūṃ sādhayitvā yadi bhojyate, evamayaṃ svasthībhavati; nānyathā iti; śrutvā rājā saṃlakṣayati: kiṃ mamānena evaṃvidhena jīvitena, rājyaiśvaryādhipatyena ? īdṛśena yo'haṃ pareṣāṃ duḥkhārtānāṃ na śaknomi śāntiṃ kartumiti; evaṃ vicintya rājā svasantatiṃ pratyavekṣitumārabdhaḥ; tena dhātrī pṛṣṭā: amba astyahaṃ kasyacidruṣitapūrvaḥ? kathayati: deva yadā (a 464 ) tvaṃ mamāṃsagatastadā ahamapi na kasyacidruṣitapūrvā; prāgeva tvamiti; tato mātuḥ sakāśamupasaṃkramya kathayati: putra yadā tvaṃ mama kukṣigatastadā ahamapi na kasyacidruṣitapūrvā, prāgeva tvamiti; rājā kathayati: idānīṃ saṃpannaṃ bhaiṣajyamiti; tena vaidyā uktāḥ: mama paṃcasu gātreṣu śirāṃ (i 110) muñcata iti; te kathayanti: deva na vayaṃ prākṛtapuruṣasyārthāya devasya kāye śastraṃ nipātayāmaḥ iti; kuśalā bhavanti bodhisatvāsteṣu teṣu śilpasthānakarmasthāneṣu; tena svayameva paṃcasu gātreṣu śirā muktā; rudhirasya karparaḥ pūrṇaḥ; tataḥ peyā sādhayitvā dattā; anuraktapaurajānapadaḥ sa rājā; antaḥpurakumārāmātyapaurajānapadā vikroṣṭumārabdhāḥ; nānādeśābhyāgataśca janakayo vivācayitumārabdhaḥ: kathaṃ nāma ekasya prākṛtasatvasyārthāya iyantaḥ satvāḥ parityajyante? iti; tato rājñā sa janakāyaḥ samāśvāsitaḥ; tadanenopāyena ṣaṇmāsān paṃcasu gātreṣu śirā muktā; yavāgūṃ bhojitaḥ; rājñaḥ śibeḥ taccharīraṃ cālanīsadṛśaṃ saṃvṛttam; ojaḥ
parihātumārabdhaḥ; śuddhāvāsakāyikā devāḥ saṃlakṣayanti: yadyevaṃ bhadrakalpiko bodhisatvaḥ parihīyate, na śobhanaṃ; te tasya pratyahamoja upaharanti, yenāsau yāpayati; yadā tasya puruṣasya vyādhirupaśāntaḥ, tadā śibinā rājñā paṃcabhirgrāmavaraiḥ saṃvibhaktaḥ, vārāṇasyāṃ pradhānasaṃmato jātaḥ; tadā sāmantakena śabdo visṛtaḥ; śibinā rājñā paṃcasu gātreṣu śirā muktā; svarudhireṇa glānasya iyantaṃ kālamupasthānaṃ kṛtaṃ; sa ca svasthīkṛtaḥ iti; tataḥ kutūhalajātaḥ satvā āgamya taṃ puruṣaṃ pṛcchanti: bhoḥ puruṣa satyaṃ tava kila śibinā rājñā iyantaṃ kālamupasthānaṃ kṛtam? iti; sa kathayati: kiṃ mamānena kṛtaṃ? duṣṭaśoṇitaṃ pṛthivyāṃ choryeta anyasya dīyeta, kimatra āścaryamiti; vaco'vasānasamanantaramevāsya gṛhe agnirnipatitaḥ; yenāsya gṛhaṃ sarvaṃ ca svāpateyaṃ dagdhaṃ.
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo? yo'sau śibī rājā ahameva saḥ tena kālena tena samayena; yo'sau kṛtaghnaḥpuruṣaḥ eṣa evāsau devadattaḥ tena kālena tena samayena; tadāpyeṣa akṛtajñaḥ akṛtavedī; etarhyapyeṣa akṛtajña akṛtavedī; punarapi yathaiṣa akṛtajña akṛtavedī tacchrūyatāṃ.
