Chapter 15 - Śuddhodana succeeds Siṃhahanu and the descent of the Buddha

yāvadapareṇa samayena siṃhahanū rājā kālagataḥ; kapilavastuni śuddhodano rājā rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ cākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ (a 361 ) ca; so'pareṇa samayena mahāmāyādevyā sārdhamupariprāsādatalagato niṣpuruṣeṇa tūryeṇa krīḍati ramate paricārayati; dharmatā hyeṣā tuṣitabhavanastho bodhisatvaḥ paṃcabhiravalokanairlokamavalokayati jātyavalokanena deśāvalokanena kālāvalokanena vaṃśāvalokanena stryavalokanena ca; (1) kena kāraṇena bodhisatvā jātyavalokanaṃ kurvanti? tuṣitabhavanasthasya bodhisatvasyaivaṃ bhavati; kīdṛśyāṃ jātau bodhisatvāḥ pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇantīti; paśyati brāhmaṇakule kṣatriyakule ; tatra kadācidbrāhmaṇā uccakulasaṃmatā bhavanti; kadācitkṣatriyāḥ; idānīṃ tu kṣatriyāḥ uccakulasaṃmatāḥ, yanvahaṃ kṣatriyakule pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇīyāṃ; me syuratonidānaṃ pare vaktāraḥ bodhisatvena garhaṇīyāyāṃ jātau pratisandhirgṛhīta iti; tathā hi bodhisatvenānādikālīnamanākṣepasaṃvartanīyaṃ karma kṛtamupacitam; <avandhyaphaladharmadeśikā hi buddhā bhagavantaḥ>; anena kāraṇena bodhisatvā jātyavalokanaṃ kurvanti; (2) kena kāraṇena bodhisatvā deśāvalokanaṃ kurvanti? bodhisatvasyaitadabhavat: kīdṛśi deśe bodhisatvāḥ pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇantīti; paśyati yo'sau deśa ikṣuśālimālāgomahiṣīsaṃpanno bhaikṣukaśatakalilo dasyujanavivarjitaḥ āryajanādhyuṣitaḥ; tasyaivaṃ bhavatyayaṃ madhyadeśa ikṣuśālimālāgomahiṣīsaṃpanno bhaikṣukaśatakalilo dasyujanavivarjitaḥ āryajanādhyuṣitaḥ; yanvahaṃ madhyadeśe pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇīyāṃ; me syuratonidānaṃ pare vaktāraḥ bodhisatvena (37) pratyanteṣu janapadeṣu pratisandhirgṛhīta iti; tathā hi bodhisatvenānādikālīnamanākṣepasaṃvartanīyaṃ karma kṛtamupacitam; avandhyaphaladharmadeśikā hi buddhā bhagavantaḥ; anena kāraṇena bodhisatvā deśāvalokanaṃ kurvanti; (3) kena kāraṇena bodhisatvāḥ kālāvalokanaṃ kurvanti? bodhisatvasyaitadabhavat; kīdṛśe kāle bodhisatvā jaṃbūdvīpe pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇanti; utkarṣe vartamanāyāṃ prajāyāmaśītivarṣasahasrāyuṣi prajāyāmūrdhvaṃ pratisandhiṃ na gṛhṇanti; apakarṣe śatavarṣāyuṣāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ <prajāyāmarvākpratisandhiṃ na> gṛhṇanti; kena kāraṇena bodhisatvā aśītivarṣasahasrāyuṣi manuṣyāṇāmūrdhvaṃ pratisandhiṃ na gṛhṇanti? aśītivarṣasahasrāyuṣo hi manuṣyā durudvejyā bhavanti; duḥsaṃvedyā jaḍā mṛdvindriyāḥ pramattāḥ sukhabahulāḥ satyānāmabhājanabhūtāḥ; apakarṣe'pyarvāgvarṣaśatasya pañcakaṣāyā udriktā bhavanti; tadyathā āyuḥkaṣāyaḥ kleśakaṣāyaḥ satvakaṣāyo dṛṣṭikaṣāyaḥ kalpakaṣāyaśca; me syuratonidānaṃ pare vaktāraḥ pañcakaṣāyodrikte kāle bodhisatvena pratisandhirgṛhīta iti; tathā hi bodhisatvenānādikālīnamanākṣepasaṃvartanīyaṃ karma kṛtamupacitam; avandhyaphaladharmadeśikāś(a 361 ) ca buddhā bhagavantaḥ; anena kāraṇena bodhisatvāḥ kālāvalokanaṃ kurvanti; (4) kena kāraṇena kulāvalokanaṃ kurvanti? bodhisatvasyaivaṃ bhavati; kīdṛśe kule bodhisatvāḥ pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇantīti;
paśyati yatkulamuccasaṃmatamanupākruṣṭacāritraṃ yāvadāsaptamaṃ mātāmahaṃ paitāmahaṃ yugamupādāyeti; tasyaitadabhavadayaṃ śākyavaṃśa uccakulasaṃmato yāvanmahāsaṃmatamupādāyānupākruṣṭacāritraśca yanvahaṃ rājñaḥ śuddhodanasya kule pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇīyāṃ; me syuratonidānaṃ pare vaktāraḥ pratyavare kule bodhisatvena pratisandhirgṛhīta iti; tathā hi bodhisatvenānādikālīnamanākṣepasaṃvartanīyaṃ karma (38) kṛtamupacitam; avandhyaphaladharmadeśikāśca buddhā bhagavantaḥ; anena kāraṇena bodhisatvā vaṃśāvalokanaṃ kurvanti; (5) kena kāraṇena bodhisatvā stryavalokanaṃ kurvanti? bodhisatvasyaivaṃ bhavati; kīdṛśyā striyāḥ kukṣau bodhisatvāḥ pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇantīti; paśyati strī rūpavatī bhavati śīlavatī kulavatī kulinā kulavardhanī pūrvabuddheṣu kṛtapraṇidhānā aho batāhaṃ buddhasya mātā syāmiti; śaknoti bodhisatvaṃ daśamāsaṃ kukṣiṇā dhārayituṃ; na ca svārthaṃ hāpayati; tasyaivaṃ bhavati iyaṃ mahāmāyā yāvadāsaptamaṃ mātāmahaṃ mātāmahaṃ paitāmahaṃ yugamupādāyānupākruṣṭacāritrā rūpavatī śīlavatī kulinā kulavardhanī; śaknoti bodhisatvaṃ daśamāsaṃ kukṣiṇā dhārayituṃ; na ca svārthaṃ hāpayitum; tathā hi mahāmāyā pūrvabuddheṣu kṛtādhikārapraṇidhānā aho batāhaṃ buddhamātā syāmiti; ca me syuratonidānaṃ pare vaktāraḥ alakṣaṇasaṃpannāyā striyāḥ kukṣau bodhisatvena pratisandhirgṛhīta iti; tathā hi bodhisatvenānādikālīnamanākṣepasaṃvartanīyaṃ karma kṛtamupacitam; <avandhyaphaladharmadeśikāśca buddhā bhagavantaḥ>; anena kāraṇena bodhisatvāḥ stryavalokanaṃ kurvanti; atha bodhisatvaḥ pañca vyavalokanāni vyavalokya ṣaṭkāmāvacarān devāṃstriranuśrāvayati ito'haṃ mārṣāstuṣitāddevanikāyāccyutvā manuṣyeṣu pratisandhiṃ grahīṣyāmi rājñaḥ śuddhodanasyāgramahiṣyāḥ kukṣau; tasya putratvamadhigamya amṛtamadhigamiṣyāmi; yo yuṣmākamamṛtenārthī sa manuṣyeṣu pratisandhiṃ gṛhṇātu bhūyo madhyadeśa iti; evamuktāstuṣitakāyikā devā bodhisatvamidamavocan: yatkhalu bodhisatva jānīyā etarhi kalikaluṣo lokaḥ krūrasantānaprajā ākulīkṛtaśca jaṃbūdvipaḥ ṣaḍbhistārkikaiḥ ṣaḍbhirānuśravikaiḥ ṣaḍbhiḥ samāpattṛbhiḥ; tatra ṣaṭtārkikāḥ katame? tadyathā pūraṇaḥ kāśyapaḥ (39) maskarī gośāliputraḥ sañjayī vairaṭṭīputraḥ ajitaḥ keśakaṃbalaḥ kakudaḥ kātyāyano nirgrantho jñātiputra; ṣaḍānusravikāḥ katamastadyathā kūṭatāṇḍyo brāhmaṇaḥ śroṇatāṇḍyo brāhmaṇaḥ, cogī brāhmaṇaḥ brāhmāyurbrāhmaṇaḥ (a 362 ) puṣkarasāri brāhmaṇaḥ lohityaśca brāhmaṇaḥ; ṣaṭpratipattāraḥ katame? tadyathā udrako rāmaputraḥ; arāḍaḥ kālāmaḥ subhadraḥ parivrājakaḥ sañjayī māṇavaḥ asitariṣiḥ urubilvākāśyapaśca jaṭilaḥ; iha tu bodhisatvasya dvādaśayojanāni dharmaśravaṇārthamāsanaprajñaptiḥ prajñāpyate; asmākaṃ caivaṃ bhavati: yamasmākaṃ tuṣitabhavanastho bodhisatvo dharmaṃ deśayiṣyati taṃ vayaṃ dharmaṃ śrutvā tathā tathā pratipatsyāmahe; yathāpitadasmākaṃ bhaviṣyati dīrgharātramarthāya hitāya sukhāyeti; evamukto bodhisatvaḥ tuṣitakāyikān devānidamavocat: tena hi mārṣā sarvavādyāni prahaṇyantāmiti
