The Sanskrit edition of the Divyavadana (“divine narratives”) represents a collection of 38 ancient Buddhist stories belonging to the Mulasarvastivada Vinaya texts, possibly dating to 2nd century CE. These stories (avadanas) typically revolve around individual persons and how their actions in past lives affect their Karma in the present. Original title: Divyāvadāna (दिव्यावदान).

[122.002]. dharmatā khalu buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ jīvatāṃ dhriyamāṇānām yāpayatāṃ keśanakhastūpā bhavanti/
[122.002]. yadā buddhā bhagavantaḥ pratisamlīnā bhavanti, tadā bhikṣavaḥ keśanakhastūpe pujāṃ kṛtvā kecit puṇḍāya praviśanti, keciddhyānavimokṣasamādhisamāpattisukhānyanubhavanti/
[122.005]. tena khalu samayena buddho bhagavāṃs tathāgatamākārataḥ samanusmaraṃścittamabhiprasādayati--ityapi sa bhagavāṃstathāgato'rhan samyaksambuddho vidyācaraṇasampannaḥ sugato lokavidanuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārithaḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavāniti/

[122.011]. dṛṣṭvā ca punarbhikṣūnāmantrayate sma--paśyata yūyaṃ bhikṣava etaṃ bhikṣuṃ keśanakhastūpe sarvaśarīreṇa praṇipatya cittamabhiprasādayantam? evaṃ bhadanta/
[122.012]. anena bhikṣuṇā yāvatī bhūmirākrāntā adho'śītiyojanasahasrāṇi yāvat kāñcanacakramityatrāntarā yāvatyo vālukāstāvantyanena bhikṣuṇā cakravartirājyasahasrāṇi paribhoktavyāni/
[122.014]. atha teṣāṃ bhikṣūṇāmetadabhavat--puruṣamātrāyām yāvadgartāyāṃ na śakyate vālukā gaṇayitum, kṛtaḥ punaraśītiyojanasahasrāṇi yāvat kāñcanacakramiti/
[122.016]. kaḥ śakyate iyatkālaṃ saṃsāre saṃsaritumiti/
[122.016]. atha te bhikṣavo na bhūyaḥ keśanakhastūpe kārāṃ kartumārabdhāḥ/
[122.017]. atha bhagavāṃsteṣāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ cetasā cittamājñāya bhikṣūnāmantrayate sma--anavarāgro bhikṣavaḥ saṃsāro'vidyānīvaraṇānāṃ sattvānāṃ tuṣṇāsamyojanānāṃ tṛṣṇārgalabaddhānāṃ dīrghamadhvānaṃ saṃdhāvatāṃ saṃsaratām/
[122.019]. pūrvā koṭtir na prajñāyate duḥkhasya/
[122.020]. āyuṣmānupālī buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papraccha--yaduktaṃ bhagavatā asya bhikṣoriyatpuṇyaskandha iti, kutra bhadanta iyatpuṇyaskandhastanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gamiṣyati? nāhamupālinn ito bahiḥ samanupaśyāmyeva kṣatiṃ copahatiṃ ca yathā sabrahmacārī sabrahmacāriṇo'ntike/
[122.023]. tatropālinn imāni mahānti kuśalamūlāni tanutvaṃ parikṣayaṃ paryādānaṃ gacchanti/
[122.023]. tasmāttarhi te upālinn evaṃ śikṣitavyam, yaddagdhasthūṇāyā api cittaṃ na pradūṣayiṣyāmaḥ, prāgeva savijñānake kāye//
