The Sanskrit edition of the ### (lit. “the sutra of the lotus of compassion”) is an ancient Mahayana scripture devoted to Buddha Padmottara, possibly dated to as early as the 3rd century A.D. The Karunapundarika-sutra praises Shakyamuni’s compassionate activities in the Kaliyuga (the degenerate period). Alternative titles: Karuṇāpuṇḍarīkasūtra (करुणापुण्डरीकसूत्र), Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka sūtra (करुणापुण्डरीक सूत्र, Karunapundarika-sutra).

tataḥ paścād ahaṃ tatra buddhakṣetre'nuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbudhyeyaṃ / bodhiprāptasya ca me'pramāṇā prabhā bhavet; sahasrabuddhakṣetraparamāṇurajaḥsameṣu ca daśasu dikṣvanyeṣu buddhakṣetreṣu lakṣanālaṅkṛto me kāyaḥ saṃdṛśyediti / ye ca tatra sattvā māṃ paśyeyuḥ teṣāṃ sattvānāṃ rāgaḥ praśamayet, dveṣo moherṣyā mānamrakṣasarvakleśopakleśāḥ praśameyuḥ; sarve bodhicittamutpādayeyuḥ; yathāvidhāśca samādhidhāraṇīrākāṅkṣeta tathārūpā māṃ dṛṣṭvā pratilabheyuḥ / ye ca tatra sattvāḥ śītanarake pratyājātā bhaveyusteṣāṃ māṃ dṛṣṭvā sukhāvedanā prādurbhavet, tathārūpāṃ ca sukhāṃ vedanāṃ pratilabheran yathāpi nāma dvitīyadhyānasamāpannasya bhikṣoste ca māṃ dṛṣṭvā parameṇa kāyacaitasikena sukhena samarpitā bhaveyuste ca sarve'nuttarāyāṃ (KpSū 148) samyaksaṃbodhau cittamutpādayeyuste ca tataścyavitvā mama buddhakṣetra upapadyeran, tatra cānaivartikā bhaveyuḥ anuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau / ye ca sattvāḥ pretabhavaneṣūpapannāḥ mama paśyeyuḥ, peyālaṃ avaivartikā bhaveyuranuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau; evaṃ tiryagyonigatā vaktavyāḥ / evaṃ devāḥ dviguṇā ca me prabhāsayeyaṃ / apramāṇā ca me āyurbhavet, yanna śakyaṃ kenacidgaṇayituṃ anyatra sarvajñajñānena / bodhiprāptasya ca me daśasu dikṣvaprameyeṣvaparimāṇeṣvanyeṣu lokadhātuṣu buddhā bhagavanto mama varṇaṃ bhāṣeranyeṣāṃ anuśrāvayeyaṃ; ye ca tatra sattvā mama varṇaṃ śṛṇuyuḥ te tatra mama buddhakṣetre kuśalamūlaṃ pariṇāmayeyuḥ, te kālaṃ kṛtvā mama buddhakṣetra upapadyeyuḥ sthāpayitvānantaryakārakāṃ saddharmapratikṣepakāṃ āryāpavādakāṃ / bodhiprāptasya ca me ye sattvā aprameyeṣvasaṃkhyeyeṣu lokadhātuṣu mama nāmadheyaṃ śṛṇuyuḥ mama ca buddhakṣetra upapattiṃ ākāṅkṣeyuḥ, teṣāmahaṃ maraṇakālasamayeṣvanekagaṇaparivṛto vitimirasamādhiṃ samāpannāḥ tathārūpeṇa subhāṣitena tān sattvān saṃtoṣayeyaṃ, teṣāṃ sattvānāṃ sarvaduḥkhaṃ praśamet, tenaiva prasādena niścitāṃ samādhiṃ pratilabheyuḥ, (KpSū 149) cittaspṛhaṇāṃ dharmakṣāntiṃ pratilabheyuḥ, kālaṃ ca kṛtvā mama buddhakṣetra upapadyeyuḥ / ye ca punaranyatra buddhakṣetreṣu saptadhanavirahitāḥ sattvā anarthikāḥ tribhiryānairanarthikā devamānuṣikābhiḥ saṃpattibhiranarthikāḥ kuśalaparyeṣṭyā tribhiḥ puṇyakriyāvastubhiḥ adharmarāgaraktā viṣamalobhābhibhūtā mithyādharmaparītāsteṣāṃ prabhāsamādhinā maraṇakālasamaye purataḥ tiṣṭheyaṃ, anekagaṇaparivṛto dharmaṃ deśayeyaṃ, teṣāṃ svakaṃ buddhakṣetraṃ darśayeyaṃ, bodhau ca samādāpayeyaṃ / te sattvā mamāntike paramaprītiprasādaṃ prāmodyaṃ pratilabheyuḥ bodhau ca cittānyutpādyeyuḥ, teṣāṃ sarvaduḥkhā vedanāḥ praśameyuḥ, te sūryapradīpaṃ ca samādhiṃ pratilabheran, mohapraṇāhaṃ caiṣāṃ bhavet, kālaṃ ca kṛtvā mama buddhakṣetra upapadyeyuḥ" /

bhagavān āha - "sādhu sādhu satpuruṣa, śodhanaṃ te praṇidhānaṃ kṛtaṃ" / sa prāha - "yadi me bhadanta bhagavannevaṃrūpā āśā paripūryeta tathā ca daśasu dikṣu buddhakṣetraparamāṇurajaḥsameṣvanyeṣu buddhakṣetreṣūragasāracandanacūrṇaṃ pravarṣatu / ye ca sattvāstaṃ gandhaṃ ghrāyeyuḥ te sarve bodhau cittamutpādayeyuḥ / ahaṃ caitarhi (KpSū 150) praṇītadyutiṃ nāma samādhiṃ pratilabheyaṃ, yat svayaṃ eva paśyeyaṃ / utpāditaśca kulaputra praṇītadyutiḥ samādhiḥ svayamevādrākṣīt tadbuddhakṣetraparamāṇurajaḥsameṣu daśasu dikṣvanyeṣu lokadhātuṣu uragasāracandanacūrṇaṃ pravarṣitaṃ, daśasu dikṣvekaikasyāṃ diśi gaṇanātikrāntāḥ sattvāḥ prāñjalibhūtā adrākṣuḥ, ye bodhāya cittānyutpādayanti" /

bhagavān āha - "atiśīghraṃ kulaputra gandhavṛṣṭiḥ pravarṣitā, gaṇanātikrāntāśca sattvā bodhau samādāpitāstena tvaṃ kulaputra siṃhagandho bhavasva / atikrānte siṃhagandha ekagaṅgānadīvālikāsaṃkhyeye'nupraviṣṭe dvitīye uparimāya diśāyeto buddhakṣetrāddvicatvāriṃśatgaṅgānadīvālikāsameṣu buddhakṣetraparamāṇurajaḥsamāni buddhakṣetrāṇyatikramya tatra nīlagandhaprabhāsavirajo nāma lokadhāturbhaviṣyati, tatra tvaṃ siṃhagandhānuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimabhisaṃbhotsyase, prabhāsavirajaḥsamucchrayagandheśvararājo nāma tathāgato bhaviṣyasi arhan samyaksaṃbuddho yāvad buddho bhagavān" /
