Chapter 241 - The story of Kūla and Upakūla

bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣavo vārāṇasyāṃ nagaryāṃ brahmadatto nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati, ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca; tasya dvau kukkurau kūlaśca upakūlaśca; tābhyāṃ rājñaḥ aśvasannāhabhāṇḍikā khāditā; yāvadapareṇa samayena rājño brahmadattasya saṃgrāmaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ; tena amātyānāmājñā dattā; pratyavekṣata bhavantaḥ aśvasannāhabhāṇḍikāmiti; te pratyavekṣitumārabdhāḥ, paśyanti sarvāṃ chinnapracchinnāṃ; tai rājñe niveditaṃ: deva aśvasannāhabhāṇḍikā kukkureṇa bhakṣitā iti; rājā kathayati; bhavanto yadyevaṃ parityaktā mayā kukkurāḥ iti; tatra kecitpraghātitāḥ; kecinniṣpalāyitāḥ; yāvadanyatamo jānapadaḥ kukkuraḥ janapadādvārāṇasīṃ gacchati; tena te niṣpalāyamānā dṛṣṭāḥ; pṛṣṭāśca: bhavantaḥ kimarthamevaṃ yūyaṃ santrastāḥ iti; tairyathāvṛttaṃ samākhyātaṃ; sa kathayati: kimarthaṃ rājā yuṣmābhirna vijñaptaḥ iti; te kathayanti: kaḥ śaknoti rājānaṃ vijñapayitumanya praghātitāḥ; vayaṃ kathaṃcitprapalāyitāḥ; sa kathayati: tiṣṭhatu yūyam; ahaṃ yuṣmākamarthe rājānaṃ vijñapayāmi iti; tena samāśvāsitāḥ pratinivṛttāḥ; tatastena saṃpātavelāyāṃ śravaṇopavicāre sthitvā rājā gāthayā vijñaptaḥ

rājñā śrutaṃ; tena prabhātāyaṃ rajanyāmamātyānāmājñā dattā: bhavanto yenāhaṃ rātrau gāthayā vijñaptaḥ tasya samanveṣaṇaṃ kuruta iti; taiḥ rakṣiṇāmājñā dattā; samanveṣatatbhavantaḥ kena devo rātrau gāthayā vijñaptaḥ iti; taiḥ samākhyātaṃ jānapadena kukkureṇeti; rājā kathayati: bhavantaḥ parīkṣāṃ kuruta kiṃ kūlopakūlābhyāṃ bhakṣitamāhosvitanyaiḥ kukkuraiḥ iti; amātyāḥ sannipatya saṃjalpaṃ kartumārabdhāḥ: bhavanto devenaivājñā dattā kukkurāṇāṃ parīkṣāṃ kuruteti; tatkathameṣāṃ parīkṣā kartavyā iti; anye kathayanti: kimatra parīkṣitavyaṃ keśāṇḍukaṃ datvā chardāpayitavyau; atha kūlopakūlābhyāṃ carmakhaṇḍā udgīrṇāḥ; rājño niveditaṃ; rājñā parityaktau; pariśiṣṭānāmabhayaṃ dattam
kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavaḥ? yau kūlopakūlau etāveva devadattājātaśatrū tena kālena tena samayena; tadāpi etābhyāmaparāddhamanye doṣeṇa liptāḥ; etarhyapi etābhyāmaparāddhamanye doṣeṇa liptāḥ; punarapi yathā devadattaḥ akṛtajña akṛtavedī tacchrūyatāṃ.
