It includes the theory of ashtanga (eight elements of practice culminating in samadhi)—Yama (abstinences), Niyama (observances), Āsana (yoga posture), Prāṇāyāma (breath control), Pratyāhāra (withdrawal of the senses), Dhāraṇā (concentration of the mind), Dhyāna (meditation) and Samādhi (absorption).
