The Sanskrit edition of the Patañjali: Yogasūtra with Bhāṣya (= Pātañjalayogaśāstra). Based on the edition by Kāśinātha Śāstrī Āgāśe. The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali is a collection of Sanskrit aphorisms (Sūtras) on the theory and practice of Yoga. It includes the theory of ashtanga (eight elements of practice culminating in samadhi)—Yama (abstinences), Niyama (observances), Āsana (yoga posture), Prāṇāyāma (breath control), Pratyāhāra (withdrawal of the senses), Dhāraṇā (concentration of the mind), Dhyāna (meditation) and Samādhi (absorption).

Sūtra 2.13

sati mūle tadvipāko jātyāyurbhogāḥ || YS_2.13 ||

satsu kleśeṣu karmāśayo vipākārambhī bhavati nocchinnakleśamūlaḥ. yathā tuṣāvanaddhāḥ śālitaṇḍulā adagdhabījabhāvāḥ prarohasamarthā bhavanti, nāpanītatuṣā dagdhabījabhāvā tathā kleśāvanaddhaḥ karmāśayo vipākaprarohī bhavati, nāpanītakleśo na prasaṃkhyānadagdhakleśabījabhāvo veti. sa ca vipākastrividho jātirāyurbhoga iti. tatredaṃ vicāryate --- kimekaṃ karmaikasya janmanaḥ kāraṇamathaikaṃ karmānekaṃ janmākṣipatīti. dvitīyā vicāraṇā --- kimanekaṃ karmānekaṃ janma nirvartayati athānekaṃ karmaikaṃ janma nirvartayatīti. na tāvadekaṃ karmaikasya janmanaḥ kāraṇam. kasmāt, anādikālapracitasyāsaṃkhyeyasyāvaśiṣṭasya karmaṇaḥ sāṃpratikasya ca phalakramāniyamādanāśvāso lokasya prasaktaḥ, sa cāniṣṭa iti. na caikaṃ karmānekasya janmanaḥ kāraṇam. kasmāt, anekeṣu karmasu ekaikameva karmānekasya janmanaḥ kāraṇamityavaśiṣṭasya vipākakālābhāvaḥ prasaktaḥ, sa cāpyaniṣṭa iti. na cānekaṃ karmānekasya janmanaḥ kāraṇam. kasmāt, tadanekaṃ janma yugapanna saṃbhavatīti krameṇaiva vācyam. tathā ca pūrvadoṣānuṣaṅgaḥ. tasmājjanmaprāyaṇāntare kṛtaḥ puṇyāpuṇyakarmāśayapracayo vicitraḥ pradhānopasarjanabhāvenāvasthitaḥ prāyaṇābhivyakta ekapraghaṭṭakena maraṇaṃ prasādhya saṃmūrchita ekameva janma karoti. tacca janma tenaiva karmaṇā labdhāyuṣkaṃ bhavati. tasminnāyuṣi tenaiva karmaṇā bhogaḥ saṃpadyata iti. asau karmāśayo janmāyurbhogahetutvāttrivipāko'bhidhīyata iti. ata ekabhavikaḥ karmāśaya ukta iti. dṛṣṭajanmavedanīyastvekavipākārambhī bhogahetutvāddvivipākārambhī vāyurbhogahetutvānnandīśvaravannahuṣavadveti. kleśakarmavipākānubhavanirvartitābhistu vāsanābhiranādikālasaṃmūrchitamidaṃ cittaṃ vicitrīkṛtamiva sarvato matsyajālaṃ granthibhirivātatamityetā anekabhavapūrvikā vāsanāḥ. yastvayaṃ karmāśaya eṣa evaikabhavika ukta iti. ye saṃskārāḥ smṛtihetavastā vāsanāstāścānādikālīnā iti. yastvasāvekabhavikaḥ karmāśayaḥ sa niyatavipākaścāniyatavipākaśca. tatra dṛṣṭajanmavedanīyasya niyatavipākasyaivāyaṃ niyamo na tvadṛṣṭajanmavedanīyasyāniyatavipākasya kasmāt. yo hyadṛṣṭajanmavedanīyo'niyatavipākastasya trayī gatiḥ --- kṛtasyāvipakvasya nāśaḥ, pradhānakarmaṇyāvāpagamanaṃ , niyatavipākapradhānakarmaṇābhibhūtasya ciramavasthānamiti. tatra kṛtasyāvipakvasya nāśo yathā śuklakarmodayādihaiva nāśaḥ kṛṣṇasya. yatredamuktam --- "dve dve ha vai karmaṇī veditavye pāpakasyaiko rāśiḥ puṇyakṛto'pahanti tadicchasva karmāṇi sukṛtāni kartumihaiva te karma kavayo vedayante." pradhānakarmaṇyāvāpagamanam. yatredamuktaṃ --- "syātsvalpaḥ saṃkaraḥ saparihāraḥ sapratyavamarṣaḥ kuśalasya nāpakarṣāyālam. kasmāt, kuśalaṃ hi me bahvanyadasti yatrāyamāvāpaṃ gataḥ svarge'pyapakarṣamalpaṃ kariṣyati" iti. niyatavipākapradhānakarmaṇābhibhūtasya ciramavasthānam. kathamiti, adṛṣṭajanmavedanīyasyaiva niyatavipākasya karmaṇaḥ samānaṃ maraṇamabhivyaktikāraṇamuktam. na tvadṛṣṭajanmavedanīyasyāniyatavipākasya. yattvadṛṣṭajanmavedanīyaṃ karmāniyatavipākaṃ tannaśyedāvāpaṃ gacchedabhibhūtaṃ ciramapyupāsīta, yāvatsamānaṃ karmābhivyañjakaṃ nimittamasya na vipākābhimukhaṃ karotīti. tadvipākasyaiva deśakālanimittānavadhāraṇādiyaṃ karmagatiścitrā durvijñānā ceti. na cotsargasyāpavādānnivṛttirityekabhavikaḥ karmāśayo'nujñāyata iti. 2.13
