The Sanskrit edition of the Patañjali: Yogasūtra with Bhāṣya (= Pātañjalayogaśāstra). Based on the edition by Kāśinātha Śāstrī Āgāśe. The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali is a collection of Sanskrit aphorisms (Sūtras) on the theory and practice of Yoga. It includes the theory of ashtanga (eight elements of practice culminating in samadhi)—Yama (abstinences), Niyama (observances), Āsana (yoga posture), Prāṇāyāma (breath control), Pratyāhāra (withdrawal of the senses), Dhāraṇā (concentration of the mind), Dhyāna (meditation) and Samādhi (absorption).

etena bhūtendriyeṣu dharmalakṣaṇāvasthāpariṇāmā vyākhyātāḥ || YS_3.13 ||

etena pūrvoktena cittapariṇāmena dharmalakṣaṇāvasthārūpeṇa bhūtendriyeṣu dharmapariṇāmo lakṣaṇapariṇāmo'vasthāpariṇāmaścokto veditavyaḥ. tatra vyutthānanirodhayorabhibhavaprādurbhāvau dharmiṇi dharmapariṇāmaḥ. lakṣaṇapariṇāmaśca nirodhastrilakṣaṇastribhiradhvabhiryuktaḥ. sa khalvanāgatalakṣaṇamadhvānaṃ prathamaṃ hitvā dharmatvamanatikrānto vartamānalakṣaṇaṃ pratipannaḥ. yatrāsya svarūpeṇābhivyaktiḥ. eṣo'sya dvitīyo'dhvā. na cātītānāgatābhyāṃ lakṣaṇābhyāṃ viyuktaḥ. tathā vyutthānaṃ trilakṣaṇaṃ tribhiradhvabhiryuktaṃ vartamānalakṣaṇaṃ hitvā dharmatvamanatikrāntamatītalakṣaṇaṃ pratipannam. eṣo'sya tṛtīyo'dhvā. na cānāgatavartamānābhyāṃ lakṣaṇābhyāṃ viyuktam. evaṃ punarvyutthānamupasaṃpadyamānamanāgatalakṣaṇaṃ hitvā dharmatvamanatikrāntaṃ vartamānalakṣaṇaṃ pratipannam. yatrāsya svarūpābhivyaktau satyāṃ vyāpāraḥ eṣo'sya dvitīyo'dhvā. na cātītānāgatābhyāṃ lakṣaṇābhyāṃ viyuktamiti. evaṃ punarnirodha evaṃ punarvyutthānamiti. tathāvasthāpariṇāmaḥ tatra nirodhakṣaṇeṣu nirodhasaṃskārā balavanto bhavanti durbalā vyutthānasaṃskārā iti. eṣa dharmāṇāmavasthāpariṇāmaḥ. tatra dharmiṇo dharmaiḥ pariṇāmo dharmāṇāṃ tryadhvanāṃ lakṣaṇaiḥ pariṇāmo lakṣaṇānāmapyavasthābhiḥ pariṇāma iti. evaṃ dharmalakṣaṇāvasthāpariṇāmaiḥ śūnyaṃ na kṣaṇamapi guṇavṛttamavatiṣṭhate. calaṃ ca guṇavṛttam. guṇasvābhāvyaṃ tu pravṛttikāraṇamuktaṃ guṇānāmiti. etena bhūtendriyeṣu dharmadharmibhedāttrividhaḥ pariṇāmo veditavyaḥ. paramārthatastveka eva pariṇāmaḥ. dharmisvarūpamātro hi dharmo dharmivikriyaivaiṣā dharmadvārā prapañcyata iti. tatra dharmasya dharmiṇi vartamānasyaivādhvasvatītānāgatavartamāneṣu bhāvānyathātvaṃ bhavati na tu dravyānyathātvam. yathā suvarṇabhājanasya bhittvānyathākriyamāṇasya bhāvānyathātvaṃ bhavati na suvarṇānyathātvamiti. apara āha --- dharmānabhyadhiko dharmī pūrvatattvānatikramāt. pūrvāparāvasthābhedamanupatitaḥ kauṭasthyenaiva parivarteta yadyanvayī syāditi. ayamadoṣaḥ. kasmāt. ekāntatānabhyupagamāt. tadetattrailokyaṃ vyakterapaiti nityatvapratiṣedhāt. apetamapyasti vināśapratiṣedhāt. saṃsargāccāsya saukṣmyaṃ, saukṣmyāccānupalabdhiriti. lakṣaṇapariṇāmo dharmo'dhvasu vartamāno'tīto'tītalakṣaṇayukto'nāgatavartamānābhyāṃ lakṣaṇābhyāmaviyuktaḥ. tathānāgato'nāgatalakṣaṇayukto vartamānātītābhyāṃ lakṣaṇābhyāmaviyuktaḥ. tathā vartamāno vartamānalakṣaṇayukto'tītānāgatābhyāṃ lakṣaṇābhyāmaviyukta iti. yathā puruṣa ekasyāṃ striyāṃ rakto na śeṣāsu virakto bhavatīti. atra lakṣaṇapariṇāme sarvasya sarvalakṣaṇayogādadhvasaṃkaraḥ prāpnotīti parairdoṣaścodyata iti. tasya parihāraḥ --- dharmāṇāṃ dharmatvamaprasādhyam. sati ca dharmatve lakṣaṇabhedo'pi vācyo na vartamānasamaya evāsya dharmatvam. evaṃ hi na cittaṃ rāgadharmakaṃ syātkrodhakāle rāgasyāsamudācārāditi. kiṃca trayāṇāṃ lakṣaṇānāṃ yugapadekasyāṃ vyaktau nāsti saṃbhavaḥ. krameṇa tu svavyañjakāñjanasya bhāvo bhavediti. uktaṃ ca rūpātiśayā vṛttyatiśayāśca virudhyante, sāmānyāni tvatiśayaiḥ saha pravartante. tasmādasaṃkaraḥ yathā rāgasyaiva kvacitsamudācāra iti na tadānīmanyatrābhāvaḥ, kiṃtu kevalaṃ sāmānyena samanvāgata ityasti tadā tatra tasya bhāvaḥ tathā lakṣaṇasyeti. na dharmī tryadhvā dharmāstu tryadhvānaste lakṣitā alakṣitāstatra lakṣitāstāṃ tāmavasthāṃ prāpnuvanto'nyatvena pratinirdiśyante'vasthāntarato na dravyāntarataḥ. yathaikā rekhā śatasthāne śataṃ daśasthāne daśaikā caikasthāne yathā caikatve'pi strī mātā cocyate duhitā ca svasā ceti. avasthāpariṇāme kauṭasthyaprasaṅgadoṣaḥ kaiściduktaḥ. katham. adhvano vyāpāreṇa vyavahitatvāt. yadā dharmaḥ svavyāpāraṃ na karoti tadānāgato yadā karoti tadā vartamāno yadā kṛtvā nivṛttastadātīta ityevaṃ dharmadharmiṇorlakṣaṇānāmavasthānāṃ ca kauṭasthyaṃ prāpnotīti parairdoṣa ucyate. nāsau doṣaḥ. kasmāt. guṇinityatve'pi guṇānāṃ vimardavaicitryāt. yathā saṃsthānamādimaddharmamātraṃ śabdādīnāṃ guṇānāṃ vināśyavināśināmevaṃ liṅgamādimaddharmamātraṃ sattvādīnāṃ guṇānāṃ vināśyavināśinā tasminvikārasaṃjñeti. tatredamudāharaṇaṃ mṛddharmī piṇḍākārāddharmāddharmāntaramupasaṃpadyamāno dharmataḥ pariṇamate ghaṭākāra iti. ghaṭākāro'nāgataṃ lakṣaṇaṃ hitvā vartamānalakṣaṇaṃ pratipadyata iti lakṣaṇataḥ pariṇamate. ghaṭo navapurāṇatāṃ pratikṣaṇamanubhavannavasthāpariṇāmaṃ pratipadyata iti. dharmiṇo'pi dharmāntaramavasthā dharmasyāpi lakṣaṇāntaramavasthetyeka eva dravyapariṇāmo bhedenopadarśita iti. evaṃ padārthāntareṣvapi yojyamiti. ta ete dharmalakṣaṇāvasthāpariṇāmā dharmisvarūpamanatikrāntā ityeka eva pariṇāmaḥ sarvānamūnviśeṣānabhiplavate. atha ko'yaṃ pariṇāmaḥ.avasthitasya dravyasya pūrvadharmanivṛttau dharmāntarotpattiḥ pariṇāma iti. 3.13
