Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 100.32

kathaṃ jānetha catuchannarūpaṃ sadṛśaṃ ca śreṣṭhaṃ atha vā ca hīnaṃ |
virūparūpeṇa caranti santo tasmād dhi sarvasya vacaṃ kṣameyā || 32 ||

And how can you be sure about a man who is outwardly well-behaved that he is a superior, an equal or an inferior? Good men may present a rough exterior. Therefore one should bear with the speech of all and sundry. (32)
