Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 100.33

न एतम् अर्थं महती पि सेना सराजिका युध्यमानी करेया ।
यं क्षान्तिमां सत्पुरुषो करोति क्षान्तीमता वोपसमन्ति वीराः ॥ ३३ ॥

na etam arthaṃ mahatī pi senā sarājikā yudhyamānī kareyā |
yaṃ kṣāntimāṃ satpuruṣo karoti kṣāntīmatā vopasamanti vīrāḥ || 33 ||

Not even a great royal army can win so great advantage in a fight as the good man wins by forbearance. Enmities are quelled by forbearing men. (33)
