Chapter 129 - The pride of Śuddhodana

atha rājñaḥ śuddhodanasya etadabhavat; pūrvaṃ bhagavān sasurāsurasya jagataḥ pūjyaścābhūnmānyaścābhūdabhivādyaśca; idānīṃ manuṣyapūjito na devapūjita iti; athānyatamaḥ śākyakumāro gāthāṃ bhāṣate:
santarpiteyaṃ janatā maharṣe
saddharmavṛṣṭyā vadatāṃ vareṇa |
uddhṛtya ghorādvinipātamārgāt
loko'hyayaṃ mokṣapathe niyuktaḥ || iti;
rājā śuddhodanaḥ atiharṣātsatyāni na paśyati, mamaiva ekasya putra evaṃmahardhiko mahānubhāva iti; bhagavān saṃlakṣayati: kiṃ kāraṇaṃ rājā śuddhodanaḥ satyāni na paśyati; tasyaitadabhavat; atiharṣeṇa mamaivaikasya putra evaṃmahardhika evaṃmahānubhāva iti; sarvathā madāpanayo'sya kartavya iti; dvābhyāṃ kāraṇābhyāṃ satyāni na dṛśyante atilīnatayā audbilyena ca; tadasya līnaṃ cittamaudbilyaṃ ca; yanvahamasya līnāṃ santatimapanayeyamaudbilyaṃ ceti; tatra bhagavānāyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanamāmantrayate: samanvāhara maudgalyāyana rājānaṃ śuddhodanam; evaṃ bhadantetyāyuṣmānmahāmaudgalyāyano bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya yena rājā śuddhodanastenopasaṅkrāntaḥ; adrākṣīdrājā śuddhodanaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanaṃ dūrādeva; dṛṣṭvā ca punarāyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanamidamavocat: etu bhadanta mahāmaudgalyāyana, svāgataṃ bhavate mahāmaudgalyāyanāya; niṣīdatu bhadanta mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ prajñapta evāsane; niṣaṇṇaḥ āyuṣmānmahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ prajñapta evāsane
athāyuṣmānmahāmaudgalyāyanastadrūpaṃ samādhiṃ samāpanno yathā samāhite citte sve āsane'ntarhitaḥ pūrvasyāṃ diśyupari vihāyasamabhyudgamya caturvidhamīryāpathaṃ kalpayati; tadyathā cāṅkramyate, tiṣṭhati, niṣīdati, śayyāṃ kalpayati; tejodhātumapi samāpadyate; (196) tejodhātusamāpannasya āyuṣmato mahāmaudgalyāyanasya vividhānyarcīṃṣi kāyānniścaranti; tadyathā nīlāni pītāni lohitānyavadātāni māñjiṣṭhāni sphaṭikavarṇāni; yamakānyapi prātihāryāṇi vidarśayati; adhaḥ kāyaḥ prajvalati; uparimātkāyācchītalā vāridhārā syandante; uparimaḥ kāyaḥ prajvalati; adhaḥkāyācchītalā vāridhārā syandante; yathā pūrvasyāṃ diśyevaṃ dakṣiṇasyāṃ paścimāyāmuttarasyāṃ diśīti caturdiśaṃ caturvidhamṛddhiprātihāryaṃ vidarśya tānṛddhyabhisaṃskārān pratiprasrabhya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ
atha rājā śuddhodanaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanamidamavocat: santi mahāmaudgalyāyana anye'pi bhagavataḥ śrāvakā evaṃmahardhikā evaṃmahānubhāvā iti; santi mahārāja; gāthāṃ ca bhāṣate:
mahānubhāvāstraividyāścetaḥparyākakovidāḥ |
kṣīṇāsravāstathārhanto bahavaḥ śrāvakā muneḥ ||
atha rājñaḥ śuddhodanasya etadabhavat: na khalu mamaiva ekasya putra evaṃmahardhika evaṃmahānubhāvaḥ; api tu santyanye'pi pravrajitā evaṃmahardhikā (a 420 ) evaṃmahānubhāvā iti; tasya yadaudbilyamabhūttatprativigatam; atrāntare bhagavatā laukikaṃ cittamutpāditam: aho bata śakrabrahmādayo devā āgaccheyuḥ; śuddhāyāṃ devaparṣadi dharmaṃ deśayeyamiti; dharmatā khalu yasmin samaye buddhā bhagavanto laukikaṃ cittamutpādayanti tadā kuntapipīlakā api prāṇinastasmin samaye bhagavataścetasā cittamājānanti; prāgeva śakrabrahmādayo devāḥ; yasmiṃstu samaye lokottaraṃ cittamutpādayanti tasmin samaye mahāśrāvakā api bhagavataścetasā cittaṃ nājānanti; kaḥ punarvādaḥ śakrabrahmādayo devāḥ; kuta eva kuntapipīlikā api prāṇinaḥ
