The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Sulba-sutra with the commentaries of Kapardin, Karavinda and Sundararaja. The Sulbasutras are considered Vedic appendices and deals with the ancient Indian science of Mathematics and Geometry, by instructing the construction of fire-altars, among others. prathamaḥkhaṇḍaḥ

madhye lakṣaṇamardhamadhyamayośva--pāśalakṣamayormadhya ityarthaḥ / pāśayorlakṣaṇeṣviti śaṅkuṃ nihatya, upāntyayordvitīyacaturthayoḥ pāśau pratimucya madhyamena lakṣaṇena dakṣiṇāpasārya, nimittaṃ sādhyanimittaṃ kākapadaṃ kṛtvā, madhyame pāśau pratimucya, uparyupari kākapadaṃ tenaiva lakṣaṇena dakṣiṇāpasārya, śuṅkaṃ nihatya, tasminnekataraṃ pāśaṃ pratimucya, pūrvasmin śaṅkāvitaraṃ pāśantenaiva lakṣaṇena dakṣimamaṃsamāyacchet / tatra śaṅkuṃ nihanyāt / sa dakṣiṇāsaḥ / evamuttarataḥ pūrvasmātpāśamunmucyāparasmin pratimucya, tenaiva lakṣaṇena dakṣiṇā śroṇī / evamuttarataḥ pakṣaḥ / tatra iyānviśeṣaḥ--śroṇī pūrvaṃ paścādaṃsaḥ /

karavindīyā vyākhyā

nanu caturaśrasyeti kathaṃ labhyate? tatkaraṇībhūtapārśvamānyādidarśanāt / samasyeti kathaṃ? kurata iti dvivacananirdeśāt, akṣṇayārajjurityekavacananirdeśācca / kuruta iti dvivacananirdeśe kṛte sati ekaprakārā pārśvamānī tiryaṅbhānī coti gamyate / tathākṣṇayārajjurityekavacananirdeśāt sācāpyekaprakāroti jñāyate / viṣamo'pi dīrghacaturaśro vidyata eva / yakyākṣṇayārajjū anyoyaṃ same bhavataḥ sa nivartyate / samasyeti labhyate / pṛthaggrahaṇasya saṃsargaviśeṣaṇatvanivṛcyartham / dīrghacaturaśrasyākṣṇayārajjuriyatkarotītyuktaṃ, samasya kiyatkarotītyata āha--

samasya caturaśrasyākṣṇayārajjuddviṃstāvatīṃdviguṇāṃ / yasyā bhūmeriyamakṣṇayārajjuḥ tāvaddvigūṇāṃ bhūmiṃ karoti / dviguṇāyā bhūmeḥ karaṇībhavatītyarthaḥ / dvistāvatīti mayūravyaṃsakādilakṣaṇaḥsamāsaḥ / nanvakṣṇayārajjurityekavacananirdeśāt samacaturaśrā "anupapadatvā cchabdasyeti' nyāyācca dvitīyāpi tādṛśyeveti vijñāyate / tena samasyeyaṃ na viṣamasyeti gamyate / ataḥ kimartaṃ samaśabdaḥ? / ucyate--evaṃ tarhi miśraṇārthaḥ samaśabdaḥ / dvistāvīṃ bhūmiṃ yugapadeva ekīkṛtya karatīti / uttarārtho sama śabdaḥ / nanu pūrvasūtra eva dīrghaśabdamapahāya caturaśrasyetyastu tenāsyāpi siddhirbhavatyeva, satyaṃ--tathāsatyuktanyāyena samasyaiva tatsyābha dīrghasya, tasmāt pṛthagevameva vaktavyam / prakṛtopajīvanena saṃjñāṃ vidhātumāha--

samasya caturaśrasyākṣṇayārajjuḥ dvikaraṇīsaṃjñā bhavati / anvarthaiṣā saṃjñā, dvayoḥkaraṇī dvikaraṇīti / nanu pūrvasūtreṇaiva dvikaraṇītve siddhe ayuktā saṃjñā, satyaṃ, dvikaraṇītvaṃ siddhantathāpi dīrghatrikoṇādīnāmapi dvikaraṇyaḥsanti, tatra dvikaraṇītyukte asyā eva grahaṇaṃ yathā syādityevamarthaṃ saṃjñā / nanu dvikaraṇītyeva vaktavyaṃ, samagrahaṇaṃ kimarthaṃ? vakṣyamāṇāpi saṃjñā samadvikaraṇīviṣayā yathā syāditi / samagrahaṇasya pūrvasūtraviṣayatve atra sāmarthyāttatsiddhiḥ / dvikaraṇyā eva prakārāntaramāha--

samacaturaśrasya pramāṇamāyāmaṃ tattṛtīyena vardhayedvṛddhiṃ gamayet, tacca tṛtīyaṃ svacaturtheṃna tṛtīyasya caturthabhāgenetyarthaḥ / ātmacatustriśonena ātmaśabdena caturtho bhāgaḥ parāmṛśyate / vardhayedityeva, sa viśeṣaḥ--tasya viśeṣa iti saṃjñā / tṛtīyādinā yena vṛddhaṃ pramāṇaṃ tasya viśeṣasaṃjñā / yathā--dvādaśāṅgulaṃ pramāṇaṃ caturaṅgulena vardhayet, taccaturaṅgulamekāṅgulena tilonena vardhayet / caturviṃśattilāḥ pṛthusaṃśliṣṭā aṅguliriti pramāṇavido manyante / vakṣyati, "ardhe tadviśeṣamabhyasya bāhyaviśeṣābhyāṃ parigṛhṇīyāt' ityādi / kathaṃ, madhyame saviśeṣaṃ pratimucya caturthena caturthasaviśeṣeṇetyevamādi / atra saha viśeṣeṇa vartata iti sa viśeṣaḥ / viśeṣasahitaṃ pramāṇameva saviśeṣa ityavagantavyam / kimarthaṃ mahatī saṃjñā, anvarthaiṣā yathā syāditi, tatkathaṃ vipūrvaḥśiṣiratiśayavācī, " śiṣirasarvopādāne, vipūrvo'tiśaye' ityupadeśāt / akṣṇayārajjubhūtadvikaraṇyāḥ pramāṇātiriktādaṃśāt kiñcidvisiṣyate atiricyata iti viśeṣaḥ / yadvā tataḥ kiñcit kṣetraṃ viśeṣayati atirecayati mānakāla iti viśeṣaḥ / tathāhi--catustriṃśattilā aṅgulirityuktam / dvādaśāṅgulasya tilavargaḥ--ekaṃ niyutaṃ ṣaḍayutāni ṣaṭ sahasrāṇi catuvāri śatāni / tilonasaptadaśāṅgulasya tilavargaḥ--trīṇi niyutāni trīṇyayutāni dve sahasre nava śatāni viṃśatirnava ca tilapramāṇāni caturaśrakṣetrāṇi / atraikaṃ tilaṃ caturaśrakṣetradviguṇādatiricyate / tatastasya viśeṣa iti saṃjñā / veṇunā saviśeṣeṇa mīyamāne'gnau pramīyamāne tvātmani yat kṣetramatiricyeta tena nīvāraśūkamātramapi sarvathātiriktaṃ na bhavati tannathūne tato'lpataramiti dvikaraṇīkārye saviśeṣavyavahāraḥ / idānīṃ prāsaṅgikamekaṃ viharaṇaṃ vyākhyāya viharaṇāntaramāha--

athāparaṃ viharaṇaṃ--vyākhyāsyāma iti śeṣaḥ, pramāṇamātrīṃ ayāmamātrīṃ rajjuṃ ubhayataḥpāśāṃ ādyantayoḥ pāśayuktāṃ, madhye lakṣaṇaṃ nirañjanārthaṃ, ardhamadhyayoḥ pūrvārdhamadhye aparārdhamadhye ca lakṣaṇadvayaṃ nirañjanaṃ kṛtvā pṛṣṭhyāyāṃ mātavyabhūtalamadhyalekhāyāṃ rajjumāyamya--prasārya pāśayorlakṣaṇoṣviti pañca śaṅkvoḥ pāśau pratimucya madhyena nirañjanabhūtena dakṣiṇāpāyamya, nimittaṃ--cihnaṃ karoti / nimittaṃ diksaṃdarśanārtham /

madhyame śaṅkau pāśau pratimucya, uparyuparinimittaṃ tasyopariṣṭādāsannataraṃ dakṣiṇāpāyamya, rajjuṃ tadante śaṅkuṃ nikāya, madhyamācchaṅkoḥ pāśāvunmucya, dakṣiṇaśaṅkāvekaṃ pāśaṃ pratimucya, pūrvasmin śaṅkānitaraṃ pāśaṃ pratimucya, nirañjanena dakṣiṇamaṃsaṃ pratyāyacchet /
rajjuṃ yathā dakṣiṇāṃsaḥsaṃpadyate tathācha''yacchet /
evameva dakṣiṇāṃ śroṇimāyacchedityevamādīni unmucya, pūrvasmādityādīnyuttarāṇi sūtrāṇi /
pañcaśaṅkurayaṃ yogaḥsamacaturaśraviṣayaḥ //

sundararājīyā

(caturaśca karoti)

caturaśrasyetyaviśeṣāt samasyetyatrāpi saṃbadhyate / athavā uttarasūtragataṃ samasyeti padamatrāpi saṃbadhyate /

samasya dvikaraṇī /

anantaroktā samasya caturaśrasyākṣṇayārajjuḥ dvikaraṇīsaṃjñisā / tāvatordvayoḥ kṣetrayoḥ karaṇāt / tasya jñānopāyamāha--

(pramāṇaṃaśonena.)

yathā--dvādaśāṅgulasya pramāṇasya tṛtīyaṃ caturaṅgulaṃ, tasya caturthamaṅguliḥ aṅguleśvatustriṃśo bhāgastilamātram / evaṃ dvādaśāṅgulasyākṣṇayārajjustilonasapradaśāṅgulā / tathā aṣṭācatvāriṃśadaṅgulasyākṣṇayārajjuḥ catustilonā aṣṭaṣaṣṭyaṅguletyādi /

(saviśeṣaḥ.)

yo'kṣṇayāravjjā pramāṇādatirikto'ṃśaḥ sa viśeṣasaṃjñaḥ /
"ardhe tadviśeṣamabhyasya' ityādyudāharaṇam //
