The Buddha Carita (Saddharma-pundarika) by Asvaghosa a famous Sanskrit text revolving around the live and exploits of the Buddha. The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

Verse 9.18

न चैष धर्मो वन एव सिद्धः पुरे ऽपि सिद्धिर्नियता यतीनाम् ।
बुद्धिश्च यत्नश्च निमित्तमत्र वनं च लिङ्गं च हि भीरुचिह्नम् ॥ १८ ॥

na caiṣa dharmo vana eva siddhaḥ pure 'pi siddhirniyatā yatīnām |
buddhiśca yatnaśca nimittamatra vanaṃ ca liṅgaṃ ca hi bhīrucihnam || 18 ||

'"Religion is not wrought out only in the forests, the salvation of ascetics can be accomplished even in a city; thought and effort are the true means; the forest and the badge are only a coward's signs.
