The Buddha Carita (Saddharma-pundarika) by Asvaghosa a famous Sanskrit text revolving around the live and exploits of the Buddha. The Buddha Carita (Buddhacarita) is written in the style of a Kavya (or Mahakavya, epic poetry) and extant original Sanskrit text consists of roughly 1,000 metrical verses.

Verse 9.17

तद्भुङ्क्ष्व तावद्वसुधाधिपत्यं काले वनं यास्यसि शास्त्रदृष्टे ।
अनिष्टबन्धौ कुरु माप्युपेक्षां सर्वेषु भूतेषु दया हि धर्मः ॥ १७ ॥

tadbhuṅkṣva tāvadvasudhādhipatyaṃ kāle vanaṃ yāsyasi śāstradṛṣṭe |
aniṣṭabandhau kuru māpyupekṣāṃ sarveṣu bhūteṣu dayā hi dharmaḥ || 17 ||

"'Enjoy therefore for a while the sovereignty of the earth,—thou shalt go to the forest at the time provided by the shastras,—do not show disregard for thy unhappy kindred,—compassion for all creatures is the true religion.
