Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 36.1

kāmaṃ śarīraṃ samaṃ tapyati jīvitaṃ ca prāpsyāmi adya amṛtaṃ bhavavipramokṣaṃ |
vīryaṃ mayā hi pratisaṃharituṃ na śakyaṃ velāya ca salilavegaṃ yathāṇarvasya || 1 ||

Pleasure, the body and life itself are burnt out together. Now I shall attain deathless release from existence. For I can not check my exertion, which is like the flow of the ocean’s water on the sea-shore. (1)
