Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.33

yad atra satyaṃ tuvaṃ mārgase ṛjuḥ setur mahā satpuruṣeṇa sevitaḥ |
imāṃ giraṃ vyāhara agrapudgala sahasranetro maghavāṃ ca śobhase || 33 ||

Since thou hast uprightly walked in the way of truth, thou art a mighty bridge over which good men cross. O Foremost Man, thou that shinest forth like thousand-eyed Maghavan, pour forth this hymn of thine. (33)
