Sandagiri Dageba constructed by the deputy king Mahanaga in the period between 250-210 BC, is one of the oldest Stupas of Sri Lanka. Changing its original shape from time to time the stupa was restored for the last tme by king Vijayabahu I (1055-1110 A.D.). Constructed on a berm, the small original stupa had a circumambulation (Pradakshinapatha). Considering the remains at the stupa terrace, it indicates that the stupa originally had a Chathra (Chatra) and Yupa Pillar. The restored modern stupa is 60 feet high and the circumference of the base is 330 feet. There are indications that there was a Monastic Complex built around the Stupa.

Sandagiri Stupa—One of the oldest stupas in Sri Lanka, Sandagiri Dagab was built by the young king Mahanaga in AD. B.C. It was built between 250-210. This Stupa, which underwent restoration from time to time as the original condition changed, was enlarged and repaired for the last time by King Vijayabahu 1 (1055-1110 AD). A platform was built. There was a pradakshina track or padaku wu mahage around the smaller original dagaba. According to the ruins found on the outside of the stupa, it appears that the top of the stupa was also a pahuya and a yupayathamba. The height of the preserved stupa is 60 feet and the enclosure at the base is ³30 feet. There are also evidences that there was a monastery complex around this stupa.
