Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 52.120

सत्वसारस्य षड्वर्षा दुष्करं वने चरित्वा कर्मक्षये ।
स्मृति लब्धा यत्र पथास्मि गतो नायं मार्गो मोक्षाये ॥ १२० ॥

satvasārasya ṣaḍvarṣā duṣkaraṃ vane caritvā karmakṣaye |
smṛti labdhā yatra pathāsmi gato nāyaṃ mārgo mokṣāye || 120 ||

Then, when the choice being had lived a life of austerity in the forest for six years to secure the fading away of his karma, he came to recognise that the way he was on was not the way of release. (120)
