by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 52.121

अस्ति तस्मिं मति पूर्वे जंबुद्रुमे शाक्यराजम् उद्याने ।
प्रथमं ध्यानं समादयि स भविष्यति बोधिये मार्गो ॥ १२१ ॥

asti tasmiṃ mati pūrve jaṃbudrume śākyarājam udyāne |
prathamaṃ dhyānaṃ samādayi sa bhaviṣyati bodhiye mārgo || 121 ||

He gets the thought, “The way to enlightenment will prove to be the one I perceived of yore when, in the rose-apple garden of the Shakyan king, I practised the first meditation. (121)
