This page relates ‘Treatment of Ulcers’ found in the study on diseases and remedies found in the Atharvaveda and Charaka-samhita. These texts deal with Ayurveda—the ancient Indian Science of life—which lays down the principles for keeping a sound health involving the use of herbs, roots and leaves. The Atharvaveda refers to one of the four Vedas (ancient Sanskrit texts encompassing all kinds of knowledge and science) containing many details on Ayurveda, which is here taken up for study.

The word ulcer is found in the Atharvaveda. In Ayurveda, it is called Vidradhi. The symptoms of Vidradhi in Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya have been mentioned -By indulgence in stale foods (kept overnight), very hot, dry (without moisture and fat), dried up, those causing burning sensation during digestion; lying on an uneven bed, improper movement of the body parts and those (foods and activities) which cause vitiation of blood; the doṣas getting aggravated cause vitiation of the skin, muscle, fat, bone ligaments, blood and tendons and tendons and produce a swelling arising from them (any one or more) either outside or inside (the body) situated deep inside accompanied with severe pain; being either round or wide this is known as Vidradhi (abscess); it is of six kinds; from each doṣa separately, from the combination of all, from blood and trauma[1].In case of immature ulcer antar-vidradhi, Rakta-sajinā will be applied in feeding the food and coating and considering the defect, it should be taken with appropriate medicine in it. It will destroy an immature Vidradhi. To alleviate the evil antar-vidradhi, honey and Śigru should be drunk quickly and its Yavāgu should be made and eaten. It has been said in the Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya that one should be saved from the mature Vidradhi. Because when ripe, its treatment becomes impossible. Therefore, it is known that the application of Guggulu, Śilājatu and Madhuśigru is very beneficial in the treatment of Vidradhi. Śigru is mentioned in Ṛgveda and Guggulu is mentioned in Atharvaveda[2]. These two medicines are very useful medicines for Vidradhi. It is said three mantras of Atharvaveda’s, the application of Cīpudru for the treatment of Vidradhi, Balāsa and Visarpa diseases. Cīpudru application is extremely beneficial for eye, ear and heart diseases. The Atharvaveda mentions the Śāla tree. Its essence is called glue. It has medicinal properties. It is used to treat ulcers, ear infections, vaginal diseases, poisoning, acne and skin diseases.
