223,437 words | ISBN-10: 8171101519

The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 5.2.40

कृतमतिं शतशो विचारितं यद्यदि तदुपैति न मानसस्य बुद्धिः ।
भवति तदफलं शरद्धनाभं सततमतो मतिरेव कार्यसारः ॥ ४० ॥

kṛtamatiṃ śataśo vicāritaṃ yadyadi tadupaiti na mānasasya buddhiḥ |
bhavati tadaphalaṃ śaraddhanābhaṃ satatamato matireva kāryasāraḥ || 40 ||

Although a lesson may be repeated a hundred times over, it proves to be of no effect, unless it is considered with good understanding and right sense of its purport. Otherwise it is as the empty sound of autumn clouds without a drop of rain.
