Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

अलम्बुसा मिश्रकेशी पुण्डरीकाथ मालिनी ।
इन्द्राणी वारुणी वा त्वं त्वष्टुर्धातुः प्रजापतेः ।
देव्यो देवेषु विख्यातास्तासां त्वं कतमा शुभे ॥ १४ ॥
