Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 8.19

dṛṣṭvā ca yācanaka mānapramādupetaṃ harṣaṃ paraṃ pratilabhanti mahāmanuṣyāḥ |
dattvā ca vardhitaguṇāttamanā bhavanti paścāttapo na tu tapanti taponirāśā iti || 19 ||

When they see a mendicant full of pride and conceit, the great men experience a thrill of joy. For, by giving him alms, they become elated at the access of virtue. They do not fall into remorse. These then are the austerities of the Bodhisattvas. (19)
