This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 8.18

आधर्षिता च वधबन्धनताडनेभ्यो रौद्रैर् नरैर् अशुभकर्मम् अतिप्रवणैः ।
तान् एव दृष्ट्व परमार्दवमैत्रचित्ता श्लक्ष्णाभि वाग्भिर् अनघाः समुदाचरन्ति ॥ १८ ॥

ādharṣitā ca vadhabandhanatāḍanebhyo raudrair narair aśubhakarmam atipravaṇaiḥ |
tān eva dṛṣṭva paramārdavamaitracittā ślakṣṇābhi vāgbhir anaghāḥ samudācaranti || 18 ||

Though they are sentenced to be flogged, bound and scourged by violent men whose minds are bent on foul deeds, they regard these men with hearts full of meekness and friendliness, and, innocent though they are, speak to them with gentle words. (18)
