Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

ते चेदिमे कौरवाणामुपायमधिगच्छेयुरवधेनैव पार्थाः ।
धर्मत्राणं पुण्यमेषां कृतं स्यादार्ये वृत्ते भीमसेनं निगृह्य ॥ १७ ॥

te cedime kauravāṇāmupāyamadhigaccheyuravadhenaiva pārthāḥ |
dharmatrāṇaṃ puṇyameṣāṃ kṛtaṃ syādārye vṛtte bhīmasenaṃ nigṛhya || 17 ||
