Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 18.17

तारेसि तीर्णो जनतां महामुने न भायसि क्षेमकराग्रपुद्गल ।
यथातथं स्थानम् अभिप्रकाशयं विनेसि सत्ये अमृते बहुं जनं ॥ १७ ॥

tāresi tīrṇo janatāṃ mahāmune na bhāyasi kṣemakarāgrapudgala |
yathātathaṃ sthānam abhiprakāśayaṃ vinesi satye amṛte bahuṃ janaṃ || 17 ||

Having thyself crossed, O great seer, thou leadest others across. Thou Foremost Man, thou bringer of peace, thou knowest no fear. Making clear what valid reasoning is, thou leadest many men to the deathless truth. (17)
