The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Sulba-sutra with the commentaries of Kapardin, Karavinda and Sundararaja. The Sulbasutras are considered Vedic appendices and deals with the ancient Indian science of Mathematics and Geometry, by instructing the construction of fire-altars, among others. pucche prādeśamupadhāya ātmasamīpe yadavaśiṣṭaṃ tatprādeśamatrārdheṣṭakādvayaṃ madhye abhitaḥ prādeśāḥ ṣaṭ / ṣaṭsu vitastyā ca virdhanamuktaṃ kathaṃ prādeśamātramupadhāyeti? ucyate -- yadyapi vitastyā vardhanamuktaṃ, tathāpi karaṇāntarasya vidhānāt prādeśakṣetrameveṣṭakābhiśvetavyamiti yadaṅgulimātraṃ parigṛhītaṃ tatpuraṣiṇe pūrayitavyam / amumevārtaṃ pradarśayituṃ prādeśamupadhāyetyuktam / sarvamagnimiti -- pañcāśadadhyardhaḥ sūtroktāḥ pūccher'dheṣṭakādvayaṃ pracchādayet / daśettaraṃ śataṃ pañcamabhāgīyaḥ śerate / pūrvābhiḥsahāṣṭaṣaṣṭayadhikaṃ śatam / pañcadaśeti -- ekasminpañcamabhāgīyākṣetre nava pañcadaśabhāgīyāḥśerate /

catasraḥ pañcamabāgīyā navadhā vibhajya yatra vkāpi pañcadaśabhāgīyāḥ kṣeptavyāḥ tatrāpi mantrepadhānasaukaryārthaṃ prādeśa ucyate /
ātmani dvitīyarītyāṃ madhye dvayamapahāyāṣṭādaśa /
aṣṭamyāṃ ca rītyāṃ aṣṭādaśa /
evaṃ dviśataḥ prastāraḥ //

pucche yatpuruṣādhikaṃ prādeśakṣetraṃ tadupadhāya sarvamagniṃ pañcamabhāgīyābhiḥ pracchādayet / ayamāśayaḥ -- ātmapat pucche ca purastātprabhṛti pañcamabāgīyābhiḥ pracchādyamāne'gre prādeśamaviśiṣyate / asmin yogābhiriṣṭakābhirupahite pucche ca bahavo bhedā bhavantīti matvā ācāryaḥ tatparihārāyāgramārabhya pucche prādeśopadhānapūrvakaṃ pracchādayediti / yadvā -- prādeśaṃ pucche upadhāya -- pucche saṃyojya yathā prādeśaṃ pucchāt pṛthaggrīti na bhavati tathā kṛtvetyarthaḥ / yadvā prādeśaṃ puccha upadhāya pucche nidhāya sthāpayitvā, "tāsāṃ ṣaṭṭapradhā upadhāyoti' vat / yadvāgragataṃ prādeśaṃ pucchamūle nidadhyāt / bhedaṃ viparyasye tarata upadadhyāditi / tadayamarthaḥ -- yāvatā vacanavyaktiḥ sarvathā bhedābhāvāya pucchāgraṃ pucchāt pṛthagrītiṃ na kuryāt iti tātparyārtha iti / sarveṣu pakṣeṣu atiriktaṃ prādeśaṃ pucchapūle'nupahitamavaśiṣyate / tadabhitaḥ prādeśābhirardheṣṭakābhirupadadhayāt / kiñca uparitanaprastāre "yathā prathame prastāre pakṣau tathā pucchamiti' vacanāt pucchamūle'tideśaprāptānāmadhyardhānāṃ vaiparītyaṃ vakṣyati -- "viparītā apyayā' iti / taccaivamupadhāne samañjajasaṃ syāt / itarathā viruddhārthamanartaṃ ca syāt / tasmāt

pucche prādeśamupadhāyetyasya bhāgasyāyamevārtho grāhyaḥ / nanu kathaṃ sarvasyāgneḥ pañcadaśabhāgīyābhiḥ pracchādanam? ucyate -- atropahitānāmiṣṭakānāmabādhena sarvasminnagnau pañcamabhāgīyābhiḥ pracchādyāmāne tadekadeśe tāsāmasambhave satyākhyātānāmarthaṃ bruvatāṃ śaktiḥ sahakāriṇī nahi vacanaśatenāpyaśaṅkanīyārthaḥśakyo vidhātumiti caturaśrābhiḥ pracchādayitumaśakyatvāt prathamapratītasarvaśabdānurodhena jaghanyaḥ pañcamabhāgīyāśabdo bāhulyābhiprāyo varṇanīyaḥ / tena tattatsahakāriṇībhiratratyābhiḥ sambhavantībhirapi pracchādanaṃ kāryamityevamarthaṃ prādeśānāmatra prāptiḥ / eṣa nyāyastatrāṅgīkaraṇīyaḥ / tatratyābhiranuraktābhirapi pracchādane kiṃ vār'dheṣṭakāḥ karaṇenotpannāḥ na kutracidviniyuktāḥ / tāsāmupadeśabalādeva atra saṃkhyāpūraṇe pracchādane ca yathāyogaṃ viniyogaḥ kāryaḥ / kiñca yaccaturaśraṃ trayaśri sampadyetārdheṣṭakābhiḥ pādeṣṭakābhirvā pracchādayediti paribhāṣāṃ vakṣyati / tathā vātra samupadhānaṃ syāt / atrātmani sandhyantarāle catvāriṃśat pañcamabhāgīyāstāsāṃ purastāddaśa paścācca daśa / pakṣayorviṃśatiḥ pucche daśa /

etā daśottaraśataṃ pañcamabhāgīyāḥ, pañcāśadardhāścatasror'dhāḥ dvau prādeśāviti ṣaṭṣaṣṭhiḥ śataṃ ceṣṭakāḥ /
"sāhasraṃ cinvīta prathamaṃ cinvāna' ityādibhirvākyaiḥ pratyagnīṣṭakānāṃ sāhasrādayaḥsaṃkhyā vidhāsyante /
tāś ca praticiti pratiprastāraṃ ca bhidyānta iti ca tatraiva pratipādayiṣyate /
sahasrasaṃkhyā kathamatra sampādyetyāha //

pañcadaśabhāgīyābhiraṣṭāṅgulābhiḥsaṃkhyā pūrayet / saṃkhyātra pūryate? kiṃ samudāyagatā? uta prastāragatā aviśeṣāt? na samudāyagatā ānantaryāt, pratiprastāraṃ śatadvayaniyamācca, prastāragataiva saṃkhyā tatra pūryate, asya vacanasya sāmarthyādavasīyate saṃkhyāpūraṇaṃ upadhānāya pracchādikāsu kāsāṃciduddharaṇaṃ pracālanaṃ yathāyogaṃ nyāyyamiti / atra prastāraśatadvayasampattaye catustriṃśatsaṃkhyāsampādyā / ca pracchāditāsu kāśviduddhṛtya yogneṣṭakopadhānena bhavati / tatraikasmin pañcamabhāgīyākṣetre nava pañcadaśabhāgīyāḥśerata iti / tatratatropadhāne deśāniyame taduddharaṇena tāsāmupadhāne kārye mantropadhānasaukaryāya uddharaṇopadhānadeśaniyama ucyate / tatrāsmani prācyo daśa rītayaḥ, tatra madhyamarītyoḥ dvitīye uddhṛtya tatra aṣṭādaśa pañcadaśabhāgīyā āvapet / tayoreva rītyorupānte uddhṛtyāṣṭādaśa āvapet / pucche catasnaḥ prācyo rītyaḥ, tatra madhyamayoranta uddhṛtya catasror'dheṣṭakā udīcīrupadadhyāt / evaṃ dviśataḥ prastāraḥ pūryate /

atraike pucchāgre daśa prādeśānupadhāya pañcamabhāgīyābhiḥ pracchādayanti, teṣāṃ ca viparītavacanānarthakyaprasaṅgo maidaprasaṅgaś ca bhavatīti tathā nopadheyāḥ /
kiñca -- yadi pucchāgre prādeśānāmupadhānamapīṣṭamabhaviṣyattarhi pādeṣṭakāścaturmāgīyānāṃ pakṣāgrayoḥ pañcadaśa pucchāgra iti ca spaṣṭataraṃ pucchāgra ityevāvakṣyat /
na caivamuktaṃ /
tasmāduktavidha evopadhānakrama iti sthitam //

sundararājīyā vyākhyā

pucchādavaśiṣṭaṃ prādeśakṣetraṃ yāmiriṣṭakābhirmedaparihāreṇopadhātuṃ śakyate tābhirupadadhyāt / tatra pārśvayordve prādeśamātrayau madhye catasror'dheṣṭakā udagāyatāḥ / etadeva prādeśakaraṇasya prayojanam / ataḥ prādeśābhāvena kiyate / śiṣṭāgnau pañcamabhāgīyābhiḥ pracchādite ṣaṭṣaṣṭiśatamiṣṭakā bhavanti / aratniprādeśarahite pañcāśacchataṃ iṣṭakā bhavanti /

tatra ātmanyudīcye nava rītayaḥ /
tatra ātmani madhyamāyāṃ madhyamāścatasra uddhṛtya catuḥpañcāśannidheyāḥ /
ubhayatrāpi pucchāgre dve pañcamyāvuddhṛtya catasror'dheṣṭakā upadheyā udagāyatāḥ /
evaṃ dviśataḥ prastāraḥ //
