The Nīlamata mentions the threefold division of the universe indicated by the expressions like Tribhuvana, Trailokya etc. Evidently, the earth is the middle part, above and below which, are the heavens (e.g., Bhūrloka) and the nether worlds. But as a matter of fact, the division seems to be twofold only, for the earth itself is regarded as the lowest of the seven upper regions.

The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.

- Jambūdvīpa,
- Śākadvīpa,
- Kuśadvīpa,
- Krauñcadvīpa,
- Śālmalīdvīpa,
- Gomedadvīpa,
- Puṣkaradvīpa.
The list of dvīpas corresponds to that, which is given in the Matsya Purāṇa. Thus in this matter, Soḍḍhala seems to follow the Matsya Purāṇa. Rājaśekhara has also given the list of seven dvīpas. Soḍḍhala has referred to one Gomedadvīpa instead of Plakṣa which is found in the list of Rājaśekhara and also in Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa (54.6). Each of these seven dvīpas is surrounded by seven concentric oceans. It can also be spelled as Bhūloka.
Kavya (काव्य, kavya) refers to Sanskrit poetry, a popular ancient Indian tradition of literature. There have been many Sanskrit poets over the ages, hailing from ancient India and beyond. This topic includes mahakavya, or ‘epic poetry’ and natya, or ‘dramatic poetry’.
