Chapter 54 - Self-tortures and fastings

atha bodhisatvastaṃ vanaṣaṇḍamabhyavagāhyānyataradvṛkṣamūlaṃ niśritya danteṣu dantānādhāya, jihvāgraṃ tāluni pratiṣṭhāpya, cetasā cittamabhigṛhṇātyabhinipīḍayatyabhisantāpayati; tasya cetasā cittamabhigṛhṇato'bhinipīḍayato'bhisantāpayataḥ sarvaromakūpebhyaḥ svedo muktaḥ; tadyathā balavān puruṣo durbalataraṃ puruṣamudbāhukaṃ gṛhītvā abhinigṛhṇīyādabhinipīḍayedabhisantāpayet, tasya romakūpebhyaḥ svedo mucyeta; evameva bodhisatvasya tasmin samaye danteṣu dantānādhāya jihvāgraṃ tāluni pratiṣṭhāpya cetasā cittamabhinigṛhṇato'bhinipīḍayato'bhisantāpayataḥ sarvaromakūpebhyaḥ svedo muktaḥ; ārabdhaṃ cāsya vīryaṃ bhavatyasaṃlīnaṃ, prasrabdhaḥ kāyo bhavatyasaṃrabdhaṃ, upasthitā smṛtirbhavatyasaṃmūḍhā, samāhitaṃ cittaṃ bhavatyekāgram; evaṃrūpāṃ bodhisatvasya duḥkhāṃ tīvrāṃ kharāṃ kaṭukāmamanāpāṃ vedanāṃ vedayataścittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati; yathāpitadbhāvitatvātkāyasya; tasyaitadabhavat: yanvahaṃ bhūyasyā mātrayā vyādhmātakāni <dhyānāni> dhyāyeyamiti; bhūyasyā mātrayā vyādhmātakāni dhyānāni dhyātumārabdhaḥ; sa vyādhmātakāni dhyānāni dhyāyan, mukhe nāsikāyāṃ cāśvāsapraśvāsān saṃniruṇaddhi; tasya mukhe nāsikāyāṃ cāśvāsapraśvāseṣu saṃniruddheṣvatyarthaṃ tasmin samaye śirasi śirovedanā vartante; tadyathā balavān puruṣo durbalatarasya puruṣasya dṛḍhena vāratrakeṇa dāmnā śirasyāmreḍakaṃ dadyāt, tasyātyarthaṃ śirasi śirovedanā varteran; evameva bodhisatvasya vyādhmātakāni dhyānāni dhyāyato'tyarthaṃ śirasi śirovedanā vartante; ārabdhaṃ cāsya vīryaṃ bhavatyasaṃlīnam; prasrabdhaṃ kāyo bhavatyasaṃrabdhaḥ; upasthitā smṛtirbhavatyasaṃmūḍhā; samāhitaṃ cittaṃ bhavatyekāgram; evaṃrūpāṃ bodhisatvasya duḥkhāṃ tīvrāṃ kharāṃ kaṭukāmamanāpāṃ vedanāṃ vedayataś(a 380 ) cittaṃ na paryādāya tiṣṭhati; yathāpitadbhāvitatvātkāyasya; tasyaitadabhavat: yanvahaṃ bhūyasyā mātrayā vyādhmātakāni (101) dhyānāni dhyāyeyamiti; tadbhūyasyā mātrayā vyādhmātakāni dhyānāni dhyātumārabdhaḥ; sa vyādhmātakāni dhyānāni dhyāyanmukhe nāsikāyāṃ cāśvāsapraśvāsān saṃniruṇaddhi; tasya mukhe nāsikāyāṃ cāśvāsapraśvāseṣu saṃniruddheṣu atyarthaṃ tasmin samaye
