Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 104.10

समितावि प्रहाय पुण्यविपाकं विरतो ज्ञात्व इमं परं च लोकं ।
जातीमरणं उपातिवृत्तो श्रमणो तादि प्रवुच्चति तथत्वा ॥ १० ॥

samitāvi prahāya puṇyavipākaṃ virato jñātva imaṃ paraṃ ca lokaṃ |
jātīmaraṇaṃ upātivṛtto śramaṇo tādi pravuccati tathatvā || 10 ||

He who is tranquil, having abandoned all merit and its maturing, he who is passionless, knowing this world and the world beyond, who has overcome birth and death—such an one is truly called a recluse. (10)
