by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 91.41

antarāyaṃ vijānitvā na sānaṃ khāyi rākṣasī |
sā tatra putraṃ preṣeti rākṣasīṇāṃ nivedakaṃ |
bhakṣito khu mayā rājā kṣipraṃ āgacchathattave || 41 ||

Conscious of the risk, she did not set about eating them herself, but sent her son to take the news to the other ogresses and to say, “I have devoured the king. Come hither at once to eat.” (41)
