by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 8.12

jātījarāmaraṇaśokaupadravāṃś ca tyaktuṃ prabhuḥ na hi vivartayi mānasāni |
duḥkhasaṃhati jagato arthakaro prajānām ity etaṃ vikramabalaṃ puruṣarṣabhānām iti || 12 ||

“Although I could quit the round of birth, death, grief and tribulation, I should not let my mind waver. Though overwhelmed with ills, I would bring blessings to the world of men.” Such is the courage and strength of these sturdy men. (12)
