The Sanskrit edition of the Yoga-vasistha including English translation and grammatical analysis. The Yogavasistha is a Hindu spiritual text written by Valmiki (who also authored the Ramayana) dealing with the philosophical topics from the Advaita-vedanta school. Chronologically it precedes the Ramayana.

Verse 3.96.17

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
गतेव सकलङ्कत्वं कदाचित्कल्पनात्मकम् ।
उन्मेषरूपिणी नाना तदैव हि मनःस्थिता ॥ १७ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca |
gateva sakalaṅkatvaṃ kadācitkalpanātmakam |
unmeṣarūpiṇī nānā tadaiva hi manaḥsthitā || 17 ||

Vasishtha replied:—As man began to lose sight of his consciousness, and laboured under suppositions about his self, it was then that he found the mind to be the waking principle within him (i. e. it is after one has lost the knowledge of his conscious soul, that he thinks himself to be composed of the mind. Or it was after man's degradation from his spiritual nature, that he came to consider himself as an intellectual being with no higher power than his mental faculties the manas.
