Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

शल्य उवाच ।
एवं स्तुतो हव्यवाहो भगवान्कविरुत्तमः ।
बृहस्पतिमथोवाच प्रीतिमान्वाक्यमुत्तमम् ।
दर्शयिष्यामि ते शक्रं सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥ ९ ॥
