The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Sulba-sutra with the commentaries of Kapardin, Karavinda and Sundararaja. The Sulbasutras are considered Vedic appendices and deals with the ancient Indian science of Mathematics and Geometry, by instructing the construction of fire-altars, among others. Sutra 20.12

yac caturaśraṃ tryaśraṃ saṃpadyetārdheṣṭakābhiḥ pādeṣṭakābhir pracchādayet || ĀpŚus_20.12 ||

sarvatra ṣoḍaśya eva śerate / yadi tathā kṣipyeran bhidyeta sarvatra / ato bhedaparihārāya yatne kriyamāṇe trikoṇaṃ caturaśraṃ prakāradvayaṃ sampadyate / pūrvasmin prastāre cataraśraṃ sampadyate trikoṇaṃ ca / iha trikoṇameva / tatra ardheṣṭakābhiḥ pādeṣṭakābhirvā pracchādayet upadadhyāt / pucchāpyaye catasraḥ ṣoḍaśyo viśayāḥ / prācyau dve pratīcyau dve / tāsāṃ paścāt daśa ṣoḍaśyaḥ / tiryakpucche'pi / viśayāmānabhito dvāvardhau dvāvātmi / tāsāṃ purastāccatasraḥ ṣoḍaśyaḥ prācyaścaturthyaḥ pratyarpitāḥ / tāsāṃ purastādviparyastāḥ ṣaḍuttare pārśve / tāsāṃ purastāccatasror'dheṣṭakāḥ / tāsāṃ purastāccatasraḥ ṣoḍaśyaḥ pratīcyastābhiḥ pratyarpitāḥ / tāsāṃ purastād dve ṣoḍaśyau nānāgre prācyau / tayormadhye dvāvardhau / ātmanyardhapādeṣṭakāmātrī / ātmani dvāvardhau viśayāvabhitaḥ / ardhaṣoḍaśyau sahitau / evaṃ dvādaśonaṃ śatadvayam / iha keciddīrghāyuṣaḥsūtrametadanādṛtya svamanīṣikayā karaṇāntaramutpādya saṃkhyāpūraṇameva kurvanti / kiṃ nāma teṣāmaśakyam? vayaṃ tu sūtrakāramatānusāreṇoktaṃ gṛhṇīmaḥ /

evaṃ kṣetrapūraṇaṃ kṛtvā prakṛtitaḥ prāptaṃ saṃkhyāpūraṇaṃ evaṃ kartavyamityāha----

evaṃ ṣoḍaśībhiḥ pracchādyamāne saṅkhyāpūraṇāya kāsuciduddhṛtāsu ca yat kṣetraṃ caturaśraṃ tryaśri sambhavet tat kṣetramardheṣṭakābhiḥ pādeṣṭakābhirvā pracchādayet -- tābhiḥsaṃkhyāṃ pūrayedityarthaḥ nanu pracchādayediti vacanena saṅkhyāpūraṇaṃ katham? ucyate / tattadagnau pracchādanavidhyanantaraṃ saṅkhyāṃ pūrayoditi vidhānāt / iha ca ṣoḍaśībhiḥ pracchādite saṅkhyāyā asamāptestatpūraṇāpekṣayā dvitīyapracchādanavacanaṃ saṅkhyāpūraṇārthameveti gamyate / kiñca dvividhaḥ prākṛto'gnaniḥ samacaturaśramātreṣṭakā asamacatu; raśramātreṣṭakāś ca / prathame caturaśrāgnau pañcadaśabhāgīyābhirardheṣṭakā / bhiś ca saṅkhyā pūritā / dvitīye pādeṣṭakāṇūkāṣaḍbāgīyābhiś ca pūritā / tadihāpe pādā ardhā aṇūkāś ca vihi /

tāsāsanti /
tasmāt pādeṣṭakābhirardheṣṭakābhiś ca saṅkhcā pūritādvitīye ṣoḍaśībhiś ca yathā yogaṃ saṅkhyāpūraṇaṃ yuktamiti gamyate /
kiñca saṅkhyāpūraṇasya nyāyyatve sati atropadiṣṭeṣṭakābhyo'nyābhiḥsaṅkhyāpūraṇasyāśakyatvāt pādābhirardhābhiś ca sukaratvāt tābhireva saṅkhyāpūraṇaṃ yuktataram /
ataḥ pracchāditāsu kāściduddhṛtya pādārdhaṣoḍaśībhairyathāyogaṃ yāvatsaṅkhyamupadheyā iti //

sundararājīyā vyākhyā

ava dayet

yaccaturaśraṃ trayaśri veti pādyārdhābhiḥ saṅkhyāpūraṇaṃ, tatrar(dhyār) dhābhiḥ pūraṇapakṣe ātmani prācyaḥ ṣaḍrītayaḥ / tatra dakṣiṇottarayormadhye ṣaṭ ṣaḍar(dhyār)dhāḥ / dvitīyasyāṃ paścātpurastācca dve ardhe ukte / tayoḥ samīpe dve ṣoḍaśyau prāgāyate / tayormadhye'ṣṭāvardheṣṭakāḥ / evameva pañcamī rītiḥ / prāgāyatābhiḥ dvādaśabhiḥ ṣoḍaśībhirmadhyarītī dve / pucchāpyaye dve ṣoḍaśyau / pratyagagrapucchaṃ pañcadaśāṅgulena pūrvāccatasraḥ ṣoḍaśyaḥ udagāyatāḥ / pucchāgre dakṣiṇator'dheṣṭakā pūrvamuktā / tasyā udak ṣoḍaśyudagagrā tasyā udagdve ardhe tato dve ṣoḍaśyau tato dve ar(dhyer)dhe tataḥ ṣoḍaśī / tator(dhyār)dhā pūrvamuktā / evaṃ dviśataḥ prastāraḥ / pādyābhiḥ pūraṇapakṣe ātmani dakṣiṇapārśve dvādaśārdhyā uddhṛtya aṣṭau catasraḥ ṣoḍaśyo nidheyāḥ / evamuttarapārśve'pi / asminnapi prastāre prakārāntaramāha ----

antya -- cchāt

atrāpi vāśabdo'dhyāhāryaḥ / yathā pūrvasmin prastāre antyā bāhyaviśeṣā iti ṣoḍaśyo vihitāḥ tathātrāpi śroṇyaṃseṣu dve dve ṣoḍaśyau prāgagre pratyagagre cetyaṣṭau nidheyāḥ / etadapyaśakyatvātpakṣayorna bhavati / asmin pakṣe śiro'pyaye ardhenopadheye / pucchāpyaye'pyardhe dve upadheye / pārśvasthāścatasro rītayordhe'ṣṭakābhiḥpūraṇīyāḥ / madhyamarītyoḥ ṣoḍaśaṣoḍaśyaḥ pucchāgramadhye ṣaṭ ṣoḍaśyaḥ / tataḥ pūrvasyāṃ madhye dve ṣoḍaśyau / śeṣer'dhyāḥ / tataḥ pūrvasyāṃ madhye dve prācyau ṣoḍaśyau / śeṣaṃ pūrvavadeva / eṣa dviśataḥ / pādyābhiḥ pūraṇapakṣe'pi pūrvavatsarvatrāviśeṣāt pādāyābhiḥ sambhave'pi viparītaviśeṣā upadheyāḥ / kecittu antyā bāhyaviśeṣā iti pūrvamuktam / tayoreva prastārayoḥ śeṣamāhuḥ / tadanupapannaṃ, antyānāṃ ṣoḍaśīnāṃ aniyataviśeṣāṇāmabhāvāt / ubhayasmin prastāre prāhuḥ antyā iti na kevalaṃ ṣoḍaśya eva gṛhyante / apitu yāḥ kāśvāntyā upadheyāḥ tāś ca bāhyaviśeṣāḥ kāryā iti /

teṣāṃ śirasi dve ṣoḍaśyau bāhyaviśeṣe bāhyaviśeṣābhyāṃ parigṛhṇīyāt /
ātmakaraṇīnāṃ sandhiṣu ṣoḍaśyo bāhyaviśeṣā iti bāhyaviśeṣa śabdakaṃ anarthakaṃ syāt /
anyatra śiraso'nyatra pucchāditi ca virudhyete /
śirasi pādyānāṃ pucchapārśvayorardhyār(dhā)nāṃ ca bāhyaviśeṣāṇāmeveṣṭatvāt //

prastāradvayasādhāraṇamidam /

ṣoḍaśībhiḥ pūrayitumaśakyopi yāvaddviśatapūrti ardhāḥ pādyā upadheyāḥ /
tatrārdhyārahitābhiḥ pādyābhiḥ saṅkhyāṃ pūrayitumaśakyatvāt /
tasmādardhyābhiḥ saṃmiśrābhirvā pādyābhiḥ pūraṇam /
tatprakāraś ca pūrvamekoktaḥ //
