Chapter 204 - Devadatta visits the Buddha and departs indignant

atha devadattaścatubhirbhikṣubhiḥ sahāyakaiḥ kokālikena khaṇḍadravyeṇa kaṭamorakatiṣyeṇa samudradattena ca sārdhaṃ yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ; adrākṣīdbhagavān devadattaṃ dūrādeva dṛṣṭvā ca punarāyuṣmantaṃ mahāmaudgalyāyanamāmantrayate: rakṣedānīṃ maudgalyāyana, rakṣedānīṃ maudgalyāyana, eṣa gacchati devadattaḥ; idānīmeṣa mohapuruṣo mama purastādātmanaivātmānaṃ vyākariṣyati; athāyuṣmānmahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ bhagavataḥ (i 75) pādau śirasā vanditvā tadrūpaṃ samādhiṃ samāpannaḥ, yathā samāhite citte veṇuvane'ntarhito bhārgaveṣu pratyaṣṭhādśiśumāragirau bhīṣaṇikāvane mṛgadāve.
atha devadatto yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ; upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte asthāt*; ekāntasthito devadattao bhagavantamidamavocat*: etarhi bhagavān jīrṇo vṛddho mahallakaḥ klāmyati catasraḥ parṣado'vavaditum; aho vata bhagavānmama bhikṣusaṃghaṃ pratinisṛjet; ahaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ parikarṣayeyaṃ; bhagavānalpotsuko viharetdṛṣṭadharmasukhavihārayogamanuyukta; śāriputramaudgalyāyanayostāvadahaṃ mohapuruṣa peśalayoḥ sabrahmacāriṇorapi bhikṣusaṃghaṃ na pratinisṛjāmi; kutaḥ punastvayi nisrakṣyāmi śave kheṭāśake?
atha devadattasyaitadabhavat*: bhagavān śāriputramaudgalyāyanayorvarṇaṃ bhāṣate; māṃ ca śavakheṭāśakavādena samudācarati iti; tatra devadatto (a 452 ) bhagavato'ntike kopaṃ ca dveṣaṃ ca mānaṃ ca mrakṣaṃ ca āghātaṃ ca akṣāntiṃ ca apratyayaṃ ca prāviṣkārṣīt*; atha devadatto humiti kṛtvā triḥ śiraḥ kampayitva bhagavato antikātprakrāntaḥ.
