Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 100.34

subhāṣitan te anumodayāmo anyan te pṛcchāmi tad iha brūhi |
katividhaṃ śīlavantaṃ vadesi katividhaṃ prajñāvantaṃ vadesi |
katividhaṃ satpuruṣaṃ vadesi katividhaṃ ca śiri na jahāti || 34 ||

We are gratified at your well-spoken reply. Now I ask you another question and do you tell me the answer. What kind of man do you call a moral man? What kind of man do you call a wise man? What kind of man do you call a good man? What kind of man is it whom fortune never deserts? (34)
