Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 76.110

तत् किं मन्यसि उदायि मतिसारो अन्यः तेन कालेन ।
तेन समयेन हम् एव अनर्थिको कामभोगेहि ॥ ११० ॥

tat kiṃ manyasi udāyi matisāro anyaḥ tena kālena |
tena samayena ham eva anarthiko kāmabhogehi || 110 ||

Why should you think, Udayin, that Matisara at that time was somebody else? It was I who at that time cared nought for the pleasures of sense. (110)
