This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 64.271

भिन्दित्व वारां शतं वा सहस्रं शक्यन्तरीक्षं गणयितुं नभाग्रं ।
चतुर्दिशानां शत एत्तकानि न बुद्धवर्णो क्षपयितुं शक्य सर्वं ॥ २७१ ॥

bhinditva vārāṃ śataṃ vā sahasraṃ śakyantarīkṣaṃ gaṇayituṃ nabhāgraṃ |
caturdiśānāṃ śata ettakāni na buddhavarṇo kṣapayituṃ śakya sarvaṃ || 271 ||

“It might he possible, by piercing the firmament a hundred or a thousand times, to determine the highest point of the sky and all the hundreds of four-quarters, but it is not possible to dim all the lustre of the Buddha. (271)
