by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 23.4

उदुम्बरस्य यथ पुष्पं दुल्लभं कदाचिद् उत्पद्यति लोके माणव ।
एम्ऽ एव बुद्धान महायशान कदाचिद् उत्पादं तथगतानां ॥ ४ ॥

udumbarasya yatha puṣpaṃ dullabhaṃ kadācid utpadyati loke māṇava |
em' eva buddhāna mahāyaśāna kadācid utpādaṃ tathagatānāṃ || 4 ||

“As the blossom of the glomerous fig-tree but rarely is found appearing in the world, O young brahman, so is it with the appearance of glorious Buddhas and Tathagatas. (4)
