This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 21.60

राजवरं उपगम्य ब्रूवीहि इमे लक्षणगुणविधिज्ञाः ।
तिष्ठन्ति अष्टसहस्रं प्रविशेन्सुः यदि अनुमतन् ते ॥ ६० ॥

rājavaraṃ upagamya brūvīhi ime lakṣaṇaguṇavidhijñāḥ |
tiṣṭhanti aṣṭasahasraṃ praviśensuḥ yadi anumatan te || 60 ||

“Go in to the king and say to him, ‘Here are eight thousand men who know the significance and rules of signs, and they would enter if it is your pleasure.’” (60)
