This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 21.59

ते राजकुलद्वारे शुचिवसनवरस्थिता स्तिमितशब्दा ।
प्रतिहाररक्षम् अब्रवीत् सुमधुरकरविंकरुतघोषाः ॥ ५९ ॥

te rājakuladvāre śucivasanavarasthitā stimitaśabdā |
pratihārarakṣam abravīt sumadhurakaraviṃkarutaghoṣāḥ || 59 ||

Arrayed in fine and pure raiment they stood in silence at the door of the king’s palace and addressed the door-keeper in a tone gentle as the cuckoo’s, saying, (59)
