Mahavastu [sanskrit verses and english]

by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 13.6

किंचित् एव भवति अपरिशून्यं क्षेत्रम् अप्रतिमरूपधरेहि ।
क्षेत्रकोटिनयुतानि बहूनि शून्यकानि पुरुषप्रवरेहि ॥ ६ ॥

kiṃcit eva bhavati apariśūnyaṃ kṣetram apratimarūpadharehi |
kṣetrakoṭinayutāni bahūni śūnyakāni puruṣapravarehi || 6 ||

Here and there is a field that is not empty of those whose form is peerless. But many kotis of nayutas of fields are empty of the pre-eminent men. (6)
