by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 9.24

न प्रार्थयन्ति महाभोगान् अदानगुणसंपदा ।
अनन्ताध्याशयाश् चैवं भवन्ति पुरुषोत्तमा इति ॥ २४ ॥

na prārthayanti mahābhogān adānaguṇasaṃpadā |
anantādhyāśayāś caivaṃ bhavanti puruṣottamā iti || 24 ||

They do not aim at great wealth, the prosperity that comes through miserliness. Thus do these highest of men become intent on what is infinite. (24)
