by Émile Senart | 1882 | 56,574 words

This is the Sanskrit Mahavastu: a lengthy work on Buddhist teachings and narratives belonging to the school of early Buddhism (Mahasanghika). This edition only includes those metrical verses occuring in the various stories and Jatakas, as well as the corresponding English translation by J. J. Jones.

Verse 9.23

स्वयंभूसर्वदर्शित्वम् अभिकाङ्क्षन्ति पण्डिताः ।
पुद्गलाध्याशया भवन्ति चैवम् अप्रतिमा ध्रुवाः ॥ २३ ॥

svayaṃbhūsarvadarśitvam abhikāṅkṣanti paṇḍitāḥ |
pudgalādhyāśayā bhavanti caivam apratimā dhruvāḥ || 23 ||

In their wisdom they yearn for the omniscience of the Self-becoming One. Thus do they become intent on the Foremost Man, and incomparably steadfast (23)
